Touchbacks

September 10, 2011 at 02:23AM View BBCode

The Kickers are improving their leg strength at an alarming rate.

1960- 256 touchbacks
1961- 282
1962- 400
1963- 482
1964- 178 thru 5 games

In the Walter Payton league there is an option to kick off from the 35 yd line. Soon there won't be any kick returns.

Atlanta certainly has improved...23 touchbacks in the first 4 seasons. 7 so far in 5 games now.

Chris, can you make the field bigger? Maybe 110 yards?

No, but you can set your kick returners to attempt returns from deeper into the end zone. The default is only 3 yards.

Percentages started around 24% in 1960 to over 40% now.

Kickers are more subject to talent inflation because only one good one is needed per team.

I'll taper off kickoff distance above a certain level so the best kickers are hitting touchbacks 50% of the time; right now a maxed out kicker can hit a touchback about 80% of the time. That will bring the average down to a reasonable level without affecting most kickers much at all.

I think part of the problem is also more people starting to use their stronger-legged punters as kickoff specialists.

Touchbacks have come back down to earth after the changes... if you look at just the touchbacks since week 6 (pull the stas and then add &fromweek=6 to the URL) we look right on the money with the NFL. I'll be interested to watch how Beta unfolds to make sure the changes haven't adversely affected single-season leagues.

I think this may have swung too far back the other way, in the past four weeks my 97 power kickoff man hasn't registered a touchback in 30 kickoffs and less than half his kickoffs are reaching inside the 10 yard line .

Using punters as kickoff men can get inconsistent results as they take an out-of-position Execution hit. Let me plug him into my test page and see what we get:

Power 97
Accuracy 59 (helps getting the best angle for longest distance)
Execution 10 (after Out of Position penalty, 39 before Out of Position penalty)

Simulating 100,000 kicks:

Longest kick: 88 yards
Shortest kick: 49 yards
Average: 72.2 yards
Touchbacks (deeper than 3 yards into end zone): 39.56%
Out of Bounds: 25
Kicks 85-89 yds: 209 (0.21%)
Kicks 80-84 yds: 2281 (2.28%)
Kicks 75-79 yds: 26565 (26.56%)
Kicks 70-74 yds: 45761 (45.76%)
Kicks 65-69 yds: 19560 (19.56%)
Kicks 60-64 yds: 4416 (4.42%)
Kicks 55-59 yds: 1076 (1.08%)
Kicks 50-54 yds: 131 (0.13%)
Kicks 45-49 yds: 1 (0.00%)

For comparison, the highest team touchback PCT in the NFL last year was 46.15% (Baltimore); the next highest was 31.18% (Oakland).

Note that the Out of Position penalty had little effect here; using his full Execution only brings his touchback % up to 39.9%. Execution is really only helpful on kickoff when it's higher than 50.

Plugging your actual kicker in, I'd get these results:

Longest: 87
Shortest: 48
Average: 70.7 yards
Touchback %: 29.523%
Out of Bounds: 2
Kicks 85-89 yds: 52 (0.05%)
Kicks 80-84 yds: 982 (0.98%)
Kicks 75-79 yds: 18740 (18.74%)
Kicks 70-74 yds: 42601 (42.60%)
Kicks 65-69 yds: 26607 (26.61%)
Kicks 60-64 yds: 8590 (8.59%)
Kicks 55-59 yds: 2212 (2.21%)
Kicks 50-54 yds: 210 (0.21%)
Kicks 45-49 yds: 6 (0.01%)

These assume perfect weather conditions, I haven't checked the weather of the games involved... but my instinct here says that your results are a smal sample size, but I would expect your kicker to get slightly better results than I am getting in my tester, and the Execution hit should be making a bigger difference.

The following are rule changes that were passed at the league's annual owners meeting in March. All changes went into effect once the labor dispute was resolved.

Changes were made regarding kickoffs to limit injuries. First, kickoffs will be moved from the 30 back up to the 35-yard line, repealing a 1994 rule change. In addition, players on the kickoff coverage team can not line up more than 5 yards behind the kickoff line, minimizing running starts and thus reducing the speed of collisions.[15] Other changes were also proposed, but a number of players and coaches expressed concern they would actually significantly reduce, if not eliminate, the number of kickoff returns.[16][17] Proposals that would have brought touchbacks out to the 25 instead of the 20, and eliminated all wedge blocks were not adopted.[15] Despite this rule, the Bears kicked off from the 30-yard line twice in their preseason game against the Bills until the league forced them to stop.

This brings up another issue, why is he receiving an out of position penalty ?

Kickoffs are separate from FG/PAT and [url=http://footballbeta.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=128072]Trebotich[/url] is higher rated as a KOS (83) than as a P (71) in fact KOS is his best role.

Also prior to his recent 0/30 Trebotich was just over 33.6 % on touchbacks for his career which seems in line .

That 83 KOS rating is after his out-of-position penalty. KOS requires a lot of power, so anyone with high Power and lower at other skills will likely be rated with KKOS as their highest rating... for this reason, KOS no longer shows up in the Best Role column (because most Punters have KOS rated higher even after penalties).

If his career results were just over 33.6% I have to wonder if there's another factor at work here, 'cause I'd have expected him to be higher.

I've increased the kick lengths a bit but I'm going to continue to look at this.

OK, but you've gotta make it wider and go with three downs then.

Actually I truly believe that if the CFL game was played by NFL caliber athletes it would be the greatest football ever.

The wider field, three downs and motion allowed would make the game simply amazing to watch .

Hm. I wonder how hard it would be to add a CFL ruleset as a league option....

You've already got the cities in there. We could test a couple seasons in Beta if you can do it. Would be a blast.

It's not just the rules it's the field.

How would AFE react to the 110*65 field with 20 yard endzones ?

That's the thing, there are so many assumptions in the code of a 100 yard field, it's not done as a variable. Plus DynastyVision graphics would allneed to be redone in the larger size.
