We've been discussing name changes in the Ty Cobb League. Particularly, we've been talking about long names that are sentences, one word names, and generally unrealistic names.July 13, 2002 at 10:58AM View BBCode
It's only my opinion and I've probably whined about it enough, but I hate giving owners the ability to change players' names. Although I'm not wild about it, I can live with it when players are renamed after real-life players -- particularly if they are from the 50's. But I've seen players renamed after movie stars, singers and just pure nonsense names like you've described. I know I should probably get medication, but it just drives me nuts. Again, just my opinion and I certainly respect those who disagree.July 13, 2002 at 01:02PM View BBCode
I use my fabricated names mostly just to help me keep the players straight. It's easier for me to remember that Ted Williams is my left fielder instead of, say, Kid Burgess.July 14, 2002 at 09:56PM View BBCode
i agree with that too, i posted something about it in another topic. i dunno if anyone saw it. i suggested that maybe a nickname spot on the player card would be better for this instead of having a full name change. in the game play by play, perhaps the nickname and real name can be randomly swapped back and forth. that might be too confusing tho, if no one else knows what your guy's nicknames are and they see john smith singles to left and then speedy mcgee steals second. just a thought though:)July 14, 2002 at 10:18PM View BBCode
I would suggest that a player can be re-named only within a certain window after acquiring him (either through drafting or trading), and then that name sticks for the duration of the player's career with that team. That should avoid confusion.July 15, 2002 at 07:41PM View BBCode
I agree with Bob on this one. Ideally, there wouldn't be any changing at all, although I can understand why the feature exists and certainly plenty of people take advantage of it and have fun with it. There should at least be a method of allowing a team to revert back to an original name when acquiring "Guy Who Replaced Another Guy who Really Sucked."July 15, 2002 at 09:53PM View BBCode
Maybe limiting the number of characters an owner can use in the name would help the problem a bit?July 15, 2002 at 10:24PM View BBCode
That wouldn't hurt, since I think it's those sentence names that we're mostly targeting. No sense in totally clamping down on individual styles -- I'd at least rather see Jigglybutt among the league leaders then "Can't Beat This Guy with a Stick."July 16, 2002 at 02:27PM View BBCode
I don't think that limiting the amount of characters can solve the problem. If you limit the characters, they owners will still make up wacky names but just shorter. For example, one team in the Ty Cobb League named all of their players one word (granted they are names but it's inconsistent with the majority of the league and I personally wouldn't want any of those players). The major problem is that ridiculous names effect trading because a lot of managers don't want unrealistic names. No matter what we do, people are going to name players whatever they want and I think that is fine. However, if there was a window of time or a way to change names after a trade, that would solve the major problem.July 16, 2002 at 10:11PM View BBCode
The team that has players with only one name is actually the Brazilian national soccer team: they accidentally got off at the wrong airport on their way back from Yokohama :DPages: 1
