New Beta Testers

I'd like to take care of this sometime in the next few days. I would like to set up 2 different beta leagues. One specifically for testing long term problems (talent inflation, competitive balance, draft talent). And another strictly to test game play and day to day stuff (might even be a single season league).
I think most of you guys will stay in the long term league. But if you want to help out with the other league as well, send me a UTU. I am going to work on an application for prospective new beta testers and get that rolling.
I'd like to restart the beta league and see how talent inflation is doing from the initial draft since I did make changes. According to Brad, Bob's, and others analysis, the problem seems to be prevalent in the 1956-62 range, then die back down. Can someone confirm this? So we may run up to 1962, then start again.

any chance that anyone other than myself would want to keep the current league running ad infinitum? I'd love to hit the 80's and 90's with it!

I've been tracking inflation in both the Beta and Jackie Robinson leagues. Inflation begins right away and really picks up speed in the late '50s and early '60s. It appears to peak in the late 60s. So, the biggest rate of increase is in the time frame you mentioned, but the high point is actually about 20 years in.

If you want to test talent inflation quickly, how about employing a schedule like the following:
Day 1: Initial Draft and owners set lineups
Day 2: Run season (all 162 games plus post season)
Day 3: Amateur Draft and owners set lineups
Day 4: Run season (all 162 games plus post season)
etc....
At that rate you'd complete 15 seasons per month. Granted, such a fast pace has its problems: limited trading, no injury adjustments, etc. Still, if you're looking to study talent inflation, the compressed time frame has more advantages than disadvantages, IMHO.

I have a good sense about the owners in this league as far as participation with issues, suggestions, bugs. What I really need from you is whether you want to be in both leagues (I may not take you in both) and your specs about computer and browsers. Don't spend hours hunting down posts to prove your cases.

Not sure if we're launching into a discussion on these issues in this thread or not, but I figured I'd jump in anyway.
I'd have to disagree with Bob on the hyperspeed approach. I agree that fast is good. But if you're essentially eliminating any team management, trading, player development strategies etc. from the test, you're tainting the results to a fairly significant degree. Most importantly, Tyson mentions competitive balance as one of the things to monitor in a long-term league. But that would be irrelevant if you're banging through the seasons that fast. No one's actually trying to compete in that case. They're just going through the mechanics of setting a lineup and draft preferences (if you manage to get to them in time).
It seems like that kind of superfast league -- which would undoubtedly provide SOME useful information -- could be handled in some sort of dummy league easily enough.
Unless Tyson is really desperate to find some answers on these issues immediately, it seems like any long-term beta league should be set up in some sort of reasonably competitive environment to provide the proper test. Owners should have at least some time to maneuver their teams in a fairly realistic (in Sim Dynasty terms) fashion. You could go to 20, 25, 30 games a day and get each season done in a week, for instance -- a fast pace that would still allow for some "normal" player movement.

Yeah, I agree with hcboomer. I could acheive results like that from running 30 seasons in a test league without real owners - and then post the results for everyone to discuss. The day-to-day or season-to-season management of the team combined with long term results is what I can't really do on my own.

I have a great idea to help test this: Start both leagues with the
exact same pool of players.
It will be interesting to see if Joe Player evolves the same way in both leagues, or if different management and development styles turn Joe Player into an All-Star in Beta A and a bum in Beta B.

I love that idea. Same players in both leagues. We'd have to ban name changes to make it easily trackable.

the year of talent inflation peaking depends on when Tyson implemented changes in the ability of teenagers available in the draft. Several months ago he cut down the number of B- overall teens in the draft. So in the Hank Aaron league it looks like we may peak in the early 60's.
personaly I think improvements should be done differently but that is another story.

An email conversation sparked an idea for measuring the overall talent level of the league. So far I've got the Position Players done (Beta League) and it appears that we peaked in 1962, then slowly started declining for the next couple of years, and then then started declining more as the seasons have gone on. Our 1975 level is about equal to where we were in 1956 (in terms of overall league talent -- for position players at least). I will email Tyson a copy of this when I am finished as well as post a more indepth explanation when I am finished.
