More info - I took over the team this season. I don't like to give up the future for the present, but the young guys involved here, Hankins and Covington, have health ratings of F and D, respectively. However, they are the only two decent young guys on the entire depth chart. There's a 17 year old in the minors who will be decent in several season.

With this trade, the team would do very well for a few seasons until everyone got old. But I would have some time to reload by drafting wisely.

Thoughts?

I didn't look at everything, but the players you would be getting are good and should put your team into playoff contention.

The thing is they are all close to that decline area, so this move is an all or nothing run at the W.S.

If you do this deal and you have other holes to fill you need to make those moves as well. Otherwise it will be a waste. You don't want to win 90-95 games and miss the playoffs.

there would be no holes to fill except for the future. the team is already a contender as it is. i would have to use a decent starter as a reliever.

if Covington and Hankins didn't have D and F health i wouldn't even consider it.

Well lets break it down a little bit here:

Skinner for Henley. Skinner is a 30 year old A+/B- starter while Henley is a 33 year old A-/A- starter. You're giving up three years here but you're getting a little better pitcher. This part is good for you with your stated goal of contending this year and next but Skinner starts his decline after that.

Johnson for Krsnich. Johnson is a 33 year old A+/B- starter while Krsnich is a 32 year old B+/A- starter. You gain one year in age and again a slightly better pitcher. Slight advantage to you.

Martin for Rice. Martin is a 23 year old B/B- reliever who won't ever have the endurance to start. He essentially a journeyman reliever who can top out as a decent pitcher but will take a lot of lumps getting there which isnt' something you'd want on a contending team. Rice is a 34 year old A/B+ SP who declines this offseason. I'd make this part of the deal in a heartbeat if I were a contending team. (problably would send Frohwrth to the pen)

Hankins for Beringer. Hankins is a 22 year old B/A- B+/A- catcher with a B+ arm. He projects to be one of the league's top catchers over the next decade. Beringer is a 32 year old A/B+ A-/A- catcher with an A+ arm. Beringer will be the better player for the next two years and then Hankins for the 15 after that. This is where the trade starts to slow down for you. You're clearly giving up a lot here.

Covington for Tesch. Covington is a 25 year old A-/B+ B+/A 3B while Tesch is a 33 year old B/A+ B/A third baseman. Obviously you've got two years where Tesch is better. You've probalby got one more where they're equal and then Covington is better. I'm not sold on Covington as an all-star type player though and would deal him.

Most of the time I wouldn't do this deal. You're giving up a lot of youth, however I watch teams every day that are close to the playoffs, not make trades, don't make the playoffs and spend a decade with those youthful players finishing 3rd. Sometimes you have to make the move.

On the other hand, you commented that you wouldn't make the move if it were not for the health of the youngsters involved. If that is the case then you shouldn't do it. Hankins D health does limit him to 130 games a year (and will increase his potential injuries) but that's an overblown concern. Its better to have a hitter who hits 22 home runs in 130 games than one who hits 25 in 150 if simply because the backup can also hit 6-7 for the first team giving the position 28-29 home runs vs. the 26-27 for the second. Yes you need a good bench with low health players but the health itself is not a good reason for trading.

If the deal didn't have the catchers in it I would jump on it in a heartbeat if you thought it would push you into the playoffs. Even with the catchers I'm inclined to do it because my philsophy has always been to take the shots when you have a chance rather than waiting through a decade of 4th place finishes.
