Bobby Smith is at that point in his progression that it's tough for us to sit here on the outside and assess the deal. We all know that an A/A pitcher is good. We all know that a B-/B- pitcher isn't very good. But a B+/A- isn't quite so easy. In some leagues, that's a decent pitcher. In some leagues, that's a fourth or fifth starter or a middle man in the pen, at best. What is Smith, relative to your league? His ERA four of the last five years suggests that he's a pretty decent pitcher in your league, right?
Loviglio is OS 23. I'm guessing he doesn't get past B+/A- v RHP. If you bat him at the top of the order and get him 700 PA and 70 IC the next five seasons, he might make it to A-/A.
But, even though I don't love Loviglio, the deal kind of makes sense. Smith has five seasons before he starts to decline. By the time your team is ready to contend, he will either be in decline or retired.

If Gold is any kind of answer, then I'd love to hear the question.
But back to Smith and your hesitation to deal the guy. Does your league have a "win" rule, where you drop in the draft if you don't win X number of games? If so, then hanging on to the guy makes some sense. But if not, what's the difference between losing 80 games and losing 110 games?
You can finish out of the playoffs WITH Smith; or you can finish out of the playoffs WITHOUT him. Either way, you finish out of the playoffs. So why not use him to acquire a building block piece for when you CAN make the post-season?
I'm not saying Loviglio is that piece. If you're reluctant to make the deal because you think you can get more than Loviglio, I'm with you. If you're reluctant to make the deal because you think Smith figures in your team's future, I'd probably disagree.
