I have become hooked on SD.
With just three games left in the season I was still in contention for a playoff spot. My team would have had to get into the LCS via the back door, but a win is a win.
With this in mind, I made an off-the-cuff comment to my wife that morning that I was thinking of taking a vacation day so I can monitor my teamâ??s progress. I mean, I might want to make some between game changes; help my teamâ??s chances.
She shot me this â??Iâ??ll pretend I didnâ??t hear that.â?? Look and handed me a cup of coffee.
This look is equivalent to a â??shot-across-the-bow.â?? I could either turn sails into the wind and prepare for battle, or pick another direction and go in peace.
You have to understand, she wasnâ??t born in any country that has a baseball tradition. Her and her family is from a country that lives and dies by whatever the national soccer team does. But thatâ??s another story.
The point is that, early in the marriage, I made it my personal â??missionâ?? to get her to like baseball to some degree.
Some years ago, I took her with me on a business trip to New York. She was going to visit kinfolk while I worked. Being in the Big Apple presented me with an excellent opportunity to advance the â??missionâ??; I bought tickets to a Yankees game.
Yankee Stadium, The House That Ruth Built. Where tradition and history is neck deep. How can she not be impressed.
We took our seats and she asked about the monuments in center field. When I named off Babe Ruth, she said, â??Yes, I know this name Babe Ruth.â??
Ah! Common ground! I told her everything I know about Ruth. How they built this stadium with his abilities in mind, statistics, stories, etc. I saw that I had gained her interest. A light came on, so to speak.
Then, the Yankees took the field. She nudged me and pointed to the players, â??Which one is Babe Ruth?â??
I then explained how The Babe has been dead for several decades. â??Oh,â?? she said, pointing now to center field, â??and they buried him there, with the others.â??
No, dear, maybe where you come from they bury soccer players on the field but not here.
The light went out. Ruth was dead and so was my â??missionâ??.
Anyway, I took the coffee to go and went to work.

Good story, I think many of us can sympathize with your plight. Once when I made a comment about how my team was doing, my girlfriend said sarcastically "Can I go to one of your games?" When I do get her to look at the game, she says stuff like "What if that guy goes out drinking the night before a game, will his health go down?"
She also said I should win every game since I must spend more time with SD than should be humanly possible. I wish she was right about that.

Most of the hours I spend on SD are at work, so this way I feel that I'm getting paid to play. But getting back to your story, I also come from a country where baseball is just a myth, football, football and more football. Or as we like to call it here, soccer. Recently I joined a soccer on-line game (still vote for SD as best game though) and it seems pretty cool, maybe you should get the wife to join. :D
