washington on the brink

coming home to griffith stadium for game 3, washington seemed to have the series in control, sending ace wes sullivan out to the mound, but new york pulled out a gutty win behind the veteran pitching of 38-year old ed dettmer... washington was only able to push across one run, losing 5-1... though it was a costly win for fancy mice of new york as they lost LF curtis johnson for the remainder of the series.
bill birkofer started for johnson in game 4 and went 1-3... washington lost catcher dave bruett for the rest of the series after game 2 and he's been replaced in the lineup by light-hitting backup julio richter... he's gone 3-7 in bruett's abence
but the story of the series continues to be LF will allen... washington juggled their lineup around after game 3's loss and moved the hot hitting allen up from 7th to the cleanup spot in the order... he responded by hitting two more homer and driving in 4 runs in game 4's 6-2 victory... he's now 8-17 with 3 homers and 9RBIs...
game 4's win put the strategos on the verge of winning it all at home in game 5... it will be game 1 winner bob keppel vs. new york ace glenn ackley who hopes to rebound from a rough game 1 and send the series home to new york....

pitching again was absent from this series.. glenn ackley was battered for the 2nd start in a row, luckily so was bob keppel...
in game 5 new york took an early 3-1 lead before washington exploded for a 5 run second highlighted by will allen's 4th homer of the series, a 3-run shot... but washington's pitching fell apart soon afterwards and new york hammered out n 11-7 win behing the bats of joe perez and matt garrick...
it will now be a travel day for both teams as washington's alabaster altenburg will square off against ny's mike pitler.. both of these guys were hammered in game 2, an 11-7 stratego win
