Change in Site Policy - Taking Site Offline during Maintenance Routines
January 16, 2007 at 10:39PM View BBCode
As some of you know, we run a nightly database backup of the site from about midnight to 12:20AM Eastern time every night. During this time, the site is nearly impossible to use.
Backing up the data like this is necessary in the event of a catostrophy. We've only had 1 or 2 of these, and none in the last 2 years. But if we have to reload the site from scratch, it's better to lose only a few games rather than all of them.
Rather than frustrate people with the slow site, beginning tonight we will simply take the game site offline during this time. This may allow the backup to run slightly faster. You will get redirected to a page that reads:
"The website is performing it's nightly backup and maintenance routine and is therefore unavailable. Please check back after 12:20AM Eastern Time.
The Message Boards should still be available at http://forum.simdynasty.com/"
We may look to move this maintenance window in the future, or have a 2nd maintenance window (like 3AM to 4AM) where the backup runs most of the time. I think that may be more convenient for people, but would take some re-scheduling work in some of the leagues.

Good call, Admin. But ...

Do we need to go over "its" vs. "it's" again?

Not to mention "catostrophy" <g>. But spelling aside, you do a great job,
Tyson!

Thanks, I've made the correction. I still think it should always have the apostrophe - it's should mean beloning to it the same way Joe's means belonging to Joe - but I don't think I carry enough weight to change the English language.

ah but then how do you contract 'it is'? it's a tricky subject.

Well, the contraction for "it is" could be spelled the same way. Context is a wonderful thing. (Tyson's always talking about Tyson's ideas.)
I do think that Tyson is right, though ... hi's influence on this matter is quite limited.

I have cut this back by 5 minutes, the site will only be in maintenance mode until 12:15AM. The backups seem to be running much more quickly now that the site is offline at the same time.
