Trade advice in the Bob Feller League

I need your help with this trade offer. This is a Private or Speed League

I took over a dead team yesterday. The owner making this offer seems like a nice guy. The team seems like it's headed for permanent mediocrity - and 3 picks, even late in the rounds, are three chances to shake that up. What do you think?

I have been offered:
George Black
Joe Brown
Jim Canseco
1971 Draft Pick Rd 1(BRO)
1970 Draft Pick Rd 1(BRO)
1970 Draft Pick Rd 2(PIT)

I would give up:

Thanks for the help.

I have a two part reaction here. First off, I don't really think your team is that bad. A few places of help (back of the rotation, OF) could use some help but I'd probably make a run at adding talent rather than subtracting. The second part is that if I decided that this team needed a shake up and that I should start rebuilding, I'd do it by dealing the vets and building around Goldman.

As for the trade itself, you're getting Brown to play at 2B in place of Goldman. He's nice and can probably hit you 20 home runs with 500 ABs but there is a reason that he's not playing in Brooklyn. Canseco is a margainal prospect at P. He's B- in both Vel and Ctrl which is low for the major leagues. I'd be surprised if he makes it very far into the red letters for either category which I think you need to be an effective SD pitcher. You're also getting Black who's a definate improvement on your minors but still a marginal prospect (in fact as I look at your minors Canseco would go back to the minors as well). You're also getting a couple of very late first round picks. I'd decline.

If I were going to trade Goldman I'd have to decide which way I was going. If I was rebuilding I'd need to deal him for the picks listed, and I'd want either Wood or Foxx coming back my way. If I were trading him to compete right now I'd want a package centered more on matured players that I can plug in immeidatly. Something like Torrent/Pree/Cabon would be what I'm looking for. Now I doubt that Brooklyn would want to do either of these senieros but that's what I'd be looking at.

This is the first team that I've taken over where someone didn't say, hey, pull the plug. I gotta agree, if I was gonna do that, Goldman would stay and be the heart of the team.

I agree that the team isn't so bad, but it feels like I'm a few pieces short, as you've suggested. I have 4 players with red overall ratings who are 30+ years old. I don't think I have 4 blue players who will turn red before those guys retire - meaning that playing for time by trying to get a little big younger doesn't feel like it would let my "red count" grow.

Thanks again for the advice. What you're saying is that I have a difficult decision to make, instead of the easy ones I found with the last two.

Hey, thanks for the time you spend on the board. Now go out and see a movie!

I've got a 7 year old. The only movies I see these days are the ones I don't really want to (for instance I saw the Santa Clause III last week)
