Alt Pos Percentage

I added a percentage to the player card for each Alt Pos. This should help people figure out when guys hit the "wall".

Hmm... I'm not sure I like it. No coach or scout could be that precise about a player's ability. The letter scores give us an idea of the player's competency without giving us exact enough numbers to Min/Max the game.

I spend a lot of time answering questions about whether a guy is improving, why he isn't at the next grade, etc. This was an easy way to save me some time in that area.

Will this solve the issues that are going on with changing my SS into an RF?

No. But it would have provided more information for us to analyze that particular problem.

Are we getting to precise with how measured everything is? We now know how much each player improved over the offseason and now we know exactly how much a player has increased his skill level in particular positions? We're eliminating all the grey area that makes the game seem a little more random. Granted some of this stuff saves the SD crew some time because they don't have to check on all of the complaints and questions but it's taking some of the randomness out of the game.

Yeah, this worries me, too. If anything, I think we should be going the other direction by making ratings less precise. I'd actually like to eliminate the plusses and minuses from the player ratings so that there would only be 5 grades for each rating: A, B, C, D or F. This would certainly make looking at a player's actual performance much more important.

Futher, the ability to sort on a particular rating already cripples the effectiveness of masking the actual numerical rating with a letter grade. If you are so inclined, you can pretty much figure out a guy's exact numerical rating by sorting on a category and seeing where he falls in the list.

For example, if my guy has B- control, I know his numerical rating is somewhere between 53 and 60, but I shouldn't know the exact figure. However, if I sort on control and see that he is one of the top couple players with B- control, I know his numerical rating must be 59 or 60.

The sorting feature is valuable, but I'd like to see it modified so that all players with the same letter grade in a category are all grouped together and sorted by name, regardless of the exact numerical rating.

I totally agree with Bob. The game needs more ambiguity not less to make it more realistic.

How about showing the player's fielding percentage instead of his rating at the alternate position. In other words show his actual performance not his potential. Or maybe show the number of errors and the # of chances:

1B (current position)
34 errors in 1,403 chances

2B (alt position #1)
11 error in 201 chances

SS (alt position #2)
18 errors in 102 chances

C (alt position #3)
1 error in 10 chances

I don't think it really matters if you know how good a guy is at his alt position. The out of position penalty is so complex, even with the percentage you can't compare him to another guy. The percentage is how close he is to that becoming his natural position. It also weighs into the out of position calculation, but arm, range, and how far out of position also weigh in. Remember, a guy that is a SS and is a C at 2B will be better there than a guy who is a LF who is a C at 2B.

I make changes for a variety of reasons to the game. These two changes fall into the "saves us time" category. We spend a lot of time fielding a lot of complaints and questions in these areas, as FTP stated. I end up telling people this information if they ask me anyhow. This hopefully will give me more time to work on other areas of the game instead of working on answering questions all the time.

I agree, this has always bothered me.
