I'm confused, if he was the only person aboard does that mean he was the pilot or are they saying he's the only person aboard besides the pilot?

I believe he was the pilot.

Yes It seems that it was his personal plane and that he was the only one on board. His passport has been located.

Haunting memories of Thurman Munson for those of old enough to remember.

New York Times coverage is a little more extensive, for those who are curious.

That's crazy that Cory Lidle was piloting that plane.

I had flashbacks to 9/11, when the first plane hit and they were debating whether it was an accident. Then the 2nd plane hit and we all knew for sure. I was watching the news today hoping we wouldn't see another plane.

This is just proof that Steinbrenner is the devil. He's so pissed after another early playoff exit, that he's going "Insomnia" on his players

hope someone gets the reference

Call me a heartless bastard, but how is this major news? It merits headlining the 6 o'clock news on an average news day, but ESPN devoting 2+ hours of breathless, nonstop coverage was absurd...

Did you expect anything less from the same channel that gave us an 8-hour coverage day on whether T.O. tried to kill himself or not?

Agreed, if it were say ......Brad Lidge, that had crashed his plane into a Houston building it would have been an interesting story, but this is NY baby!!! the center of the universe and the greatest sports franchise of all time

Actually it was major news before we even knew it was Corey Lidle simply because an airplane crashing into a New York skyscraper immediately triggers five year flashbacks until further information is known.
Also to be fair to ESPN, even though I do not always agree with their content I do think they're being consistent here. The last time an active MLB player died (Darryl Kile) they had a similar two hour plus eulogy. Lord knows that I'm not a fan of New York and they clearly have overhyped players and teams but I don't think that's the case in this situation.

I'm surprised that I have yet to hear any jokes about Lidle's lack of control.

I am glad you brought that up Bart because I was pretty unhappy with the Kyle coverage. In my office we have had 2 employes die and someones wife passed away a couple weeks ago, we sent cards and attended funerals.
I have yet to spend a day bemoaning their passing and just standing in front of my trailer house asking why. I only do that with floods and twisters.
I am sure Lidle was a nice guy, I am also sure I have sympathy for those who will miss him from their lives but I am equally sure a 10 min segment on sports center would have been enough.
I mean I have gotta be able to watch WSOP re-runs for a minimum of 4 hours a day.

Bobcat, I agree that things tend to be overblown but I was merely trying to point out that the coverage here is similar to other situations in which an active player has died.

Ahem.

One of my coworkers -- a Yankees fan -- came in this morning and delivered -- in a manner that could only suggest he'd written it down at some point over dinner the night before to cash in at this singular, glorious, water-cooler-rattling monent -- the following line:

"When I said I wanted Steinbrenner to blow up the pitching staff, this isn't exactly what I had in mind."

Only one Ive heard:

"When they said it was a Yankee that flew the plane into the building, I knew it wasn't AROD. He can't hit anything in October."

Tasteless is such a misleading term, I prefer 'full of life-affirming comedy deliciousness'...
