Hall of Fame Nominations

June 18, 2005 at 06:28PM View BBCode

We can use this thread to nominate players that you feel are deserving to be in the Earl Averill HOF. If you have someone that you want to nominate list the player and do a write up on him. When a player is nominated we can start a thread for the individual player to see if he is voted in or not so that this thread contains nothing but nominations and doesn't get all cluttered up.

I would like to nominate [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=563087]Cormac O'Donovan[/url] as a canidate for the EAL HOF. He didn't make his major league debut until the age of 32 but that didn't stop him from being one of the more dominant pitchers of the early 50's. Cormac won 20 games or more his first 4 years in the league with impressive back to back 24 win seasons in '50 and '51. Age couldn't slow Cormac down as he came back from an uncharacteristic '54 to win 18 games in '55. Cormac threw 50 CG's and had 13 SHO's in his career while winning 126 games and losing 48, in 1614 innings he SO 1193 and finished with a 3.12 era and a 1.24 whip. Cormac played in 3 World Series winning 2 rings, was a 4 time All-Star and named the starting pitcher 3 of the 4 years, he also won the Cy Young in '51 while finishing in the top 5 in '50 and '52. Cormac O'Donavan was a great pitcher in the early years of the EAL that never got to show what could have been because of his age.

Not a lot of players were as dominate over a 4 year stretch as [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=563147]Hank Geis[/url] and that is why he is being nominated for the EAL HOF. Hank was another player that got a late start in his major league career, finishing his first season at the age of 31 and only playing 5 seasons before hanging it up. Hank was a player that could be counted on everyday as he averaged 161 games his first 4 years in the league. Hank was an All Star 4 times twice being named a starter, he also was in the top 5 in MVP voting in both '50 and '51. Hank is 1 of only 4 players to hit 50 or more HR's in a season (51 in '51) in the EAL. He also had 244 hits in '50 (#3 all time), 160 RBI's in '50 (#2 all time), and had a .371 avg. in '50 (#6 all time). In only 5 seasons (1 playing only 48 games) Hank put up some impressive numbers: 875 hits, 163 HR's, 544 RBI, .330 avg., .402 OB%, and a .988 OPS.

I would like to nominate [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=563024]Bucky Dressler[/url] as a candidate for the EAL HOF. Bucky started playing pro ball with the Brooklyn Mud Ducks at the age of 27. Bucky never played a full season because of a nagging knee injury suffered in the minors but when he did play he was sure fun to watch. Bucky ranks in the top 20 all time in runs (16th), Slugging% (19th), and OPS (14th). He also ranks in the top 5 all time in OB% (5th), AVG. (5th), and triples (5th). Bucky played in 3 World Series winning 2 rings in '55 and '56, was a 7 time All-Star from '50-'56 and finished in the top 5 in MVP voting in '53. Bucky ended his 10 year career with 1526 hits, 938 runs, 89 3B, 145 HR, 772 RBI, .913 OPS, .510 SLG, .402 OB%, and an AVG. of .324.

[url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=562697]Hank Hawkins[/url] has been nominated as a candidate for the EAL HOF. Hank was a hard nose pitcher that always wanted to go the distance completing 125 games in his career (1st all time) and wasn't afraid to put a batter on the ground hitting 40 batters. These were two of the factors that made Hank one of the most feared pitchers in the N.L. during the '50s. Hank currently ranks in the top 10 all time in wins (7th), CGs (1st), WHIP (10th), IP (10th), and Ks (8th). Hank played in 3 World Series; winning 2 rings in '55 and '56. A Cy Young winner in '56 and a top 5 vote getter in '51 and '54, Hank was a 7 time All-Star from '51-'57. Hank won 20 or more games 4 times in his 11 year career. Hank Hawkins ended his career with 195 wins, 125 CGs, 19 SHO, 2680 IP, 1836 Ks, a 1.25 WHIP, and an ERA of 3.41.
Hank Hawkins was traded to the Mud Ducks a month before the start of the '51 season and quickly made them a legit contender. Hank was a great pitcher in an era that was dominated by hitters and a key part of the Mud Ducks championship years.

Al Harper nomination

October 29, 2005 at 03:54PM View BBCode

I'd like to nominate one of the first great relief pitchers, Al Harper to the EAL Hall of Fame.

Al started his career at age 26 and was the closer for the Chicago Black Sox until he retired as the league's all-time leader in saves with 351. Harper averaged nearly 32 saves a year over his 11-year career and was a mainstay of Chicago's pitching strength during their heyday. He was selected to 9 All-Star teams.

I am proud to nominate [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?playername=nobody&mode=stats&id=563035]Fred King[/url] to the Hall of Fame. Fred was drafted number three in the 1950 Draft and had been a mainstay at shortstop for the New York organization since. In his impressive 11 year career which started at a late age, Fred was a 5 time allstar(1950-1954). He was MVP in 1952, runner up a number of years including in 1950 when he was runner up with 832 votes to HOF John Selway (the only two players to receive over 800 votes). A lifetime .331 hitter with the third highest all time average and second highest single season avg. Fred King is also in the top ten and twenty in numerous other Lifetime and Single season stats.

[url=http://simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=563253]Skel May[/url]

Skel May has been nominated to the EAL Hall of Fame. Skel was the perfect Middle Reliever. He had accuracy, threw a very heavy fastball and was ready to go nearly every night. He retired second in all-time games pitched. Throwing in 988 games over his 12 year career.
He was named to the All-Star team in 1958, 1957, 1954, 1952. Fire man of the year voting 1958 (5th), 1957 (3rd). In 1957 he had no saves but his work in middle relief was so dominating he nearly won the award despite being a middle reliefer. He was 10-5 for a team below .500 with a 2.02 ERA. In 1958 he had 13 saves and 13 wins and was so dominating in relief that again Fire Man of the Year voters place him as one of the best.
Skel also won 2 WS rings one with the Rotties in 1961 and his first in 1954 where he was a fixture, working 120 games, in the Seraphim bullpen.
He won 88 games and lost 57. His Career ERA 3.46 over 988 games and 1223 innings. He also recorded 75 saves during his 12 year career. Though he was well known for his ability to hold a lead into when he had one.

I would like to nominate [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=563178]Sam Seaborn[/url] for induction to the EAL HOF. Sam was a hard nosed catcher that wasn't afraid to get dirty. In the 12 seasons he played before his knees finally gave out on him he gave everything he had everytime he put on his uniform. Sam ended his career with 331 HRs (6th all time), 1205 RBI (9th all time), a .556 SLG% (4th all time), a .396 OB% (8th all time), .952 OPS (6th all time), and a career .320 avg (9th all time).
Sam was a 6 time All Star and a starter for 4 of them, he was in the top 5 in MVP voting in '52 and hit for an astounding .369 AVG in '53. Sam appeared in the playoffs 5 times and helped lead his team to the World Series 4 times winning 2 rings.

[url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=563140]Dustin Scroggins[/url]

I am proud to nominate Dustin Scroggins for induction into the EAL Hall of Fame. Dustin got the call from the Mud Ducks in 1950 at the age of 25 and never looked back. In his rookie year which was cut short by an injury Dustin put up some very impressive numbers getting 203 hits, 32 HRs, 123 RBI, and hitting .373 in only 138 games. Dustin stuck with the Mud Ducks through the good and the bad opting to stay with the club even after they dismantled the team that had won back to back titles in '55 and '56. He wanted to be a part of the rebuild and help mentor the young kids even if it was at the cost of not winning for a few seasons, his goal was to help bring the Mud Ducks back to the top. In 1961 Dustin saw his team win 111 games and get back into the playoffs and in '62 make it back to the World Series. Dustin retired after the '62 season but was still around in '63 as the Mud Ducks hitting coach as they not only got back to the Series but brought home the Mud Ducks 3rd championship.

Dustin ended his career with 2,294 hits, 306 HRs, 1411 RBI, 264 SBs, 99 3Bs (7th all time), and 963 BBs (5th all time). His career average of .330 is 2nd all time and his single season average .373 is good for 4th all time. He ranks 5th all time in career OPS at .961 and 10th all time in SLG% at .547. Dustin's .414 career OB% is the best the EAL has ever seen and his .454 OB% in '50 is good for 2nd all time. Always known more for his patience at the plate and ability to get on base rather than his power, Dustin had an OPS over 1.000 5 times and is the only player in EAL history to have an OB% over .440 3 times and walk more than 90 times in a season 4 times. A 10 time All Star (starter of 9) Dustin won the MVP in '53 and finished in the top 5 in voting 6 times. He appeared in the playoffs 6 times and helped lead his team to the World Series 4 times winning 2 Rings.

[url=http://209.51.167.204/player.jsp?id=563315]Butch Creeden[/url]

I would like to nominate Butch Creeden for induction into the EAL Hall of Fame. Butch Creeden saw his first major league action at the age of 21 when the Mud Ducks brought him up after the break in 1950. A nagging knee injury kept Creeden from ever being able to play a full season with out needing plenty of off days but he more than made up for the days off when he was in the lineup. Creeden proved all the coaches wrong for not giving him the nod out of spring training in '50 by hitting .362 in just 64 games that season. He finished 5th in the ROY voting and many said that he would have been the clear favorite to win if he had played a full season.

Butch was a big part of the Mud Ducks three Championship teams. He was not only a vocal leader in the clubhouse but also on the field. Butch ended his 15 year career with a .325 Avg. (4th all time), .400 OB% (5th all time), 123 triples (4th all time), and 364 SBs (4th all time). He finished in the top 10 in runs scored (1500), the top 15 in OPS (.929), doubles (410), and walks (895). He finished in the top 20 in hits (2399) and SLG% (.529). Butch was a seven time All Star and appeared in the playoffs 8 times playing in 5 World Series and winning 3 Titles.

[url=http://209.51.167.204/player.jsp?id=563474]Johnny Tran[/url]

I am nominating Johnny Tran for the EAL Hall of Fame. At he age of 23 Johnny Tran was considered old when he teamed with Calvin Wan at the top of a very young Bombers pitching staff in 1950. After winning 14 games in his rookie season Johnny struggled in '51 going 6-18 but that didn't stop Johnny who was determined to be one of the best pitchers the EAL had seen. Johnny won 20 games the following season, something he would 7 times in his 13 year career. When everything was said and done Johnny ended his career with 230 wins good for 7th all time. Johnny ranks in the top 15 in starts (431), CGs (101), Shutouts (22), ERA (3.38), and WHIP (1.22). Johnny pitched 3,152 innings striking out 1,998 (18th all time).

A member of 4 All Star Teams (Starter in '53) and twice in the top 5 voting for Cy Young including a runner up finish in '53. Johnny played 11 playoff teams and made it to the World Series 5 times winning 1 Title.

Ronald was put in the middle of the NY/Boston scandal of 1950 but found his true home after being traded to KC in April of '51. In KC Ronald racked up 324 SBs (13th all time) and 136 triples (2nd All time). He still holds the single season record for triples in a season with 19 and has the 3rd best single season average at .375. Ronald ended his career with 2,074 hits, 952 RBI, 215 HRs, and a .308 avg.

[url=http://209.51.167.204/player.jsp?id=563133]Jason Lanham[/url]

I would like to nominate Jason Lanham for induction into the EAL HOF. Jason was 22 years old when he took the field as a rookie for the Pittsburgh Pimps. No one would have ever guessed that the rookie catcher would go on to set the EAL single season HR record that season with 53. Jason would later become the first player in the EAL to hit 500 HRs and ended his career ranked #2 on the All Time list with 520. In his rookie year Jason drove in 137 runs which started a streak of 13 straight years with 100+ RBI. Jason is the only known player to have such a streak to begin a career. Jason was traded after his rookie year in Pittsburgh to the NY Rotties where he became one of the best catchers in EAL history. He played 8 years in NY before returning to Pittsburgh and helped lead them to the World Series where they lost to his old team the Rotties. After a short stint in Chicago due to an expansion draft Jason was dealt to the Brooklyn Mud Ducks where he made his final run at a title before retiring after the 1965 season.

Jason ended his 16 year career with 2,936 hits (3rd all time), 520 HRs (2nd all time), 1,796 RBI (3rd all time), 489 2Bs (4th all time), and 1,138 walks (2nd all time). Jason finished ranked in the top 10 in runs scored 1,612 (9th all time), SLG% .551 (7th all time), OPS .946 (9th all time) and the top 15 in OB% .395 (11th all time) and AVG. .318 (12th all time). An 11 time All Star (starter of 9) Jason finished in the top five in MVP voting twice in '54 (2nd) and '57 (5th). Jason appeared in the playoffs 3 times and made 1 appearance in the World Series.
