Menus for Newbies (aka Training Wheels Homepage)
February 10, 2006 at 08:54PM View BBCode
Here's how it works. Under Edit Profile there is a new choice called Home Page. You have 3 choices, Default, Beginner Options, or Team Logo.
If you have this set to Team Logo, you'll get the same home page you've always gotten.
If you set this to Beginner Options, you will get a list of the most important links to manage your team instead of a team logo. (Ummm - could use some help with the layout of this HTML table if anyone wants to lend a hand) I've turned this on for everyone.
If you set this to Default, it will show you the Beginner Options for the first 30 days you have an account, then switch to Team Logo. We will set people up that way as default.
Here's the HTML code in case someone wants to pretty it up for me:
<table class=small border=1>
<tr>
<td><a href="depth.jsp">Depth Chart</a></td>
<td>
One page view of your entire major and minor league roster.
</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td><a href="roster.jsp">Lineup vs RHP</a></td>
<td> Set your starting lineup for when you face Right Handed Pitchers</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td><a href="roster.jsp?hand=l">Lineup vs LHP</a></td>
<td> Set your starting lineup for when you face Left Handed Pitchers</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td><a href="rosterp.jsp">Rotation & Bullpen</a></td>
<td> Assign roles for the pitchers on your team</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td><a href="standings.jsp">Standings</a></td>
<td> Team records for your league</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td><a href="schedule.jsp">Schedule</a></td>
<td>View past results and future matchups</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td><a href="results.jsp">Results</a></td>
<td>View Interactive Boxscores for your games</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td><a href="leagueboard.jsp">League Board</a></td>
<td>Interact with other GMs in your league</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td><a href="/forum">Message Board</a></td>
<td>Get help with your team, ask questions, suggest enhancements, or report problems</td>
</tr>
</table>

I like the new format for beginners there Tyson but think you should also link to the team stats page as most here are stat heads as well.

You also need to put the league date and date of last game played back on that page, preferably at the top.

I don't think that info is pertient for newbies - am I wrong?
Team stats - yeah, we could add that too.

The League and Team names are missing on the Beginners Home Page. I think it is important to include.

You are viewing the raw post code; this allows you to copy a message with BBCode formatting intact.
it's important for everyone, especially newbies, to know what the league date is and what time the last game played was. the way it's set up now, that info isn't even on the beta site at all anymore. when i log into any team the first thing i look at is the league date and the time the last game was played. i've done that since i first started in single season leagues. the only way any owner, newbie included, to know what time games are played is by looking at that homepage.

Here is a perfect example of why we need the league date and last game played date restored to the home page...
the world series ended last night, but we have no clue what the league date currently is...NOT one page shows it now.
There has not been a draft pool to look at/sort this season. It still shows last year's (2022) draft results. The schedule shows the first six games for the next season(2023), and the league news shows that the 11/01/2022 off season retirements have run, but we are left guessing what the league date is. Is it March 1st?

Dean - please re-read the initial post. You have 3 options for the home page under Edit Profile.
I don't think that info is important to the Newbie. Maybe a line about League Name and Team Name would be helpful. I'll see what I can work in there for them.
My goal with this page is to capture the guy who is spending his first 15 minutes on the site.

Tyson, I'd actually agree with Dean that league name and date should be on the page for all three options.

I don't know - I'll have to give it some thought and see if I can get it on the page without it becoming too cluttered. I'm not sure how important this info is for someone who's been on the site for 15 minutes.

Well it seems to me that as a newbie I took some identity from my league. It seemed to help differtiate me from the whole community at large.

I put the league date back there. Still not sure why a newbie needs this info - they aren't going to have an offseason or anything.
I also changed the drop down menus for Newbies - if you log in as betauser/betauser you will see this.

While a Newbie might not care to know when the last game was played, he definitely will care when his next game will be played. Any chance you could add that info Tyson?

Its not techically possible. I don't have that info available to me programatically with the current setup.

Then would the next best thing be to know when their last game was played so that they can at least know when to expect another game, and figure out that way when their games are played?
