The Pittsburgh Iron Horses finished the 1954 season 81-81, their first .500 season in the team's short yet disappointing history.
The young pitching staff is coming of age, led by Charlie Pastore, 24, and Judge Thomas, 26. Pastore was the number 1 pick in the 1952 Amateur draft and finished the season 13-11 with a 3.83 ERA. Thomas, drafted in 1950, had his first winning season at 13-6 with a 3.16 ERA. Pittsburgh feels Judge Thomas has the potential to be a 20 game winner with some more offensive support.
There are still some rough spots in the rotation, with youngster Kim Darcy losing 20 games, following a 19 loss season in '53. But the coaching staff is still positive on the number 1 draft pick from 1951.
According to the manager, it was the bullpen that really "saved" Pittsburgh's season. Led by a career high 46 saves by Brook "The Kid" Underwood, and middle men Len Robitaille and Chris Coleman, the bullpen combined for a 24-12 record.
The Iron Horses are looking forward to the 1955 season and the continued improvement of the pitching staff.
Good luck to all in '55.
