Blackie To Face Former Team

The Pittsburgh Iron Horses visit the Milwaukee Braves for a 3 game set starting on 7/29/54. The two teams are currently battling for 4th place, and only a game separates them, so it's a pretty important series. But of particular note is that former Iron Horse Blackie Gonzalez is scheduled to face off against Kim Darcy in the opening game.

It was Darcy who replaced Gonzalez in the rotation back on 4/15/53. Pittsburgh had designated the older Gonzalez for assignment, hoping he would clear waivers. But, unfortunatley, he was picked up by the New York Rangers only to be waived 4 days later. He was then picked up by Cincinnati and stayed there for the remainder of the season, though mostly in their minor leagues. At the opening of the '54 season, Blackie was traded to Milwaukee along with 3B Willie Henry for starter Jeff Francis.

Darcy is having a troubling year for the Iron Horses. He's 6-14 with a 4.96 ERA. Darcy just doesn't get the run support that pitchers like Judge Thomas seem to get. Darcy, the number 1 pick in the 1951 Draft, has not been able to get it going for his team. But the coaching staff remains confident in his development.

Any way you cut it, it will be an interesting contest between the youthful Darcy and the experienced Gonzalez.

Good luck to both men, and to both teams.

The Braves got off to a slow start and dwelled in the cellar for quit awhile. The starters were struggling as usual but the usually reliable pen was also struggling. Put that with a team slump and an injury to star 3B Seaver it looked very bad for Milwaukee this season.

The Braves traded for Gonzalez hoping he would lift the pitching staff. His purformance was not what management hoped it would be and tried young pitchers Buhl and Burdette with about the same results. With the aquasition of Bob Moose it was decided to move Barry Jones into the rotation and Barry has responded well to the challange. This move with the return of Seaver and the bats starting to hit have put the Braves back in the hunt. Seven games is not too big of a mountain to climb if the boys play well and limit their mistakes to situation that do not transform victories into loses.

Gonzalez was called up to give Buhl and Burdette more instuction in the minors. It is hoped that Gonzalez will rise to the ocation against the Iron Horses and the other NL teams.

Good luck to all down the stretch but don't expect any help from the Braves if they can help it.

Blackie Gonzalez and his start against Pittsburgh didn't go as well as he wanted to. He got chased in the 3nd inning, allowing 5 earned runs and 7 hits. Even though Milwaukee took the early lead 3-1 after the first inning, Pittsburgh scored 4 runs in the 3rd, which is what sent Blackie to the showers. Darcy, Blackie's replacement in Pittsburgh a year ago, had a strong outing and pitched 7.1 innings, giving up only the 3 runs (one of them unearned) in the first. The Iron Horses 3B Bill Roskos was the hero in this game, with 2 HR's and 4 RBI's. With this win, Pittsburgh has won 4 in a row and is only 7 games back of the N.L. leading Demolition and 5 back of the team from St. Louis.

Pittsbugh has now won the first 2 of the series pushing the Braves back down to 8 out of the wildcard. The Milwaukee fans hope their hometown team can salvage the last game of the series.
