Walter Johnson?May 05, 2005 at 08:48PM View BBCode
Sandy Koufax is one of the most overrated players of all time, and like Nolan Ryan, does not belong anywhere near the top 10.May 05, 2005 at 08:57PM View BBCode
Spahn? Clemens?May 05, 2005 at 09:07PM View BBCode
You've got to be kidding with Nolan Ryan.May 05, 2005 at 09:11PM View BBCode
Seaver was good, but get out. Furious is right; Lefty Grove is the best starting pitcher ever.May 05, 2005 at 09:45PM View BBCode
Lefty Grove, Walter Johnson, and Christy Mathewson. Cy Young is a bit overrated because he got his 511 wins in an era when pitchers would routinely pitch a whole game, and he also leads in career losses.May 05, 2005 at 10:20PM View BBCode
Lefty Grove, Walter Johnson, and Christy Mathewson These 3 all had amazing stats and I think they would have to be considered among the best. However my vote goes to Clemens just for the simple fact I've never seen anyone better in my time. Pedro was unreal to watch for 4 season or so but he lost a little over the last couple of years and is not the dominator he once was.May 06, 2005 at 12:47AM View BBCode

I'll admit that I generally hate all things New York and have a general bias thinking that most things that come from New York are overrated. Plus I started to get interested in baseball about 1977 which also colored my view. Of the pitchers I'ce looked at, and I'll admit I haven't yet gotten to Walter Johnson, Cy Young or Christie Mathewson, Tom Seaver is the best around. Its hard for me to give props to a Met but lets be honest here. For Tom's first part of his career with the Mets 1967-1977, the club was under .400 in games that Tom didn't get the decision in. With Seaver, they won a World Series and went to another. Their winning percentage over the 11 year span would have put them last or second to last every season. With Seaver they were contendors 8 of the 11 seasons. Keep in mind this is a club that also had Koosman, Ryan and Matlack pitching for them and none of them were even close to Seaver. To me, the difference Seaver made during that stretch between being a pathetically losing club (which I'd really like the Mets to always be) and being a World Champion once, runner up another time and finish in the top three 8 out of 11 seasons makes him the greatest ever (pending my analysis of the aformentioned early stars).
