What are the odds?

January 04, 2005 at 09:47PM View BBCode

Despite picking up two good pitchers at the front of my rotation, I am still only 1 game up and 4 games away from missing the playoffs with 13 to go. It just seems that my hitters aren't getting it done. I'm in the middle of the pack in the important stats in terms of what my team is doing. It's upside down from what it has been in the past. Usually my pitching has gotten us by, while my hitting has carried us. This year it seems my mediocre hitting may come ack to haunt me. I made no changes to my lineup this year because I was confident in their abilities. It just hasn't panned out so far.

That being said, what are the odds you guys give me for winning it all in this my last season in the BHL?

I finished 11-9 against Chicago this year, 9-12 against Boston, and 14-9 with one to go against KC. Chicago has the closest compitition in terms of pitching giving up just 35 more runs this year than me, while KC and Boston gave up 154 and 85 more runs respectively. However KC and Boston's offensive output closely resembles ours producing 33 and 38 more runs than the Tigres. Chicago was 64 runs off our pace this season. That comes out to:

Tigres +1.35 run differential
Chicago +0.69
Boston +1.04
KC +0.56

So it looks good for the AL - but you can never tell. If I go up against Boston I could get swept, Chicago could go either way, and KC should be handled in 5 games, all based on this season's history and the way our teams match up.

But what about against the NL? You can't compare stats. The makeup of the two leagues is too different. There are three 100 win teams over there, but there are also three 100 loss teams. Does it mean that those teams where that good, or the others were that bad? Probably like most things in life, it's both. The Meatheads started so poorly that they are tied for the AL lead, instead of some 20 games up, and the 3rd team is only a game out. There is still an outside chance they'll miss the playoffs completely.

I'm giving myself a 2:5 chance of taking the AL championship, and a 1:7 chance of winning it all. Do you think that's close?

Wow man, thanks for the math there. I will tell you what, i will be so ridiculously elated if i make the playoffs, i don't even care about the AL Championship or the WS. My team has been on a hot streak, 28-5 since August 15th. The problem for me is, Chicago, Detroit, and KC all have a series against Baltimore left. Chicago and i square off on the 23rd, and then i get KC after that. The road for me to make the playoffs is definitely the toughest of the 3, and it doesn't help that i am still a game back. I need a sweep against Chicago and KC, :) As for the WS, I don't think any of us can beat the Meat in the WS, they are just too good. Gotta hope one of the other two team represent, and that thier W-L record is somehow inflated, lol

I'd give you a 2:7 chance of the AL, and a 1:9 chance of WS. Hehe.

I am giving myself a 1:5 chance of making the playoffs, 1:10 chance of winning the AL, and a 1:25 chance of winning the WS.

HERE IS TO BALTIMORE GOING 9-3 TO FINISH!! (need any help? :D )

I think if you just took stats from the last 30 games or so they would come out a little different. We(chicago) have been pretty hot lately, although nothing that could compare to Boston's stretch drive. But while our pitching has remained pretty consistent, our hitter have been pulling their weight as of late.

Each night when I get home from work this is the first thing I check!

The most surprising thing is that Milwaukee may miss the playoffs, and isn't winning the NL by 20+ games.

As far as I am concerned, the most surprising thing this season is that I am contesting for the playoffs. This will be my first over .500 season and my team is quite young. It ought to keep me around for a while. If I manage to pip somebody in the last week of the season, so much the better. My pitching is the poorest of the three, so I don't give myself much of a chance...

1-2 against Cleveland is not going to cut it, i guess i'll see the playoffs next year. :(

After my disappoinitng 1-2 loss to KC, it looks as though there is no way that KC won't get the wild card. Obviously, he is going to sweep the Orioles. It was a good matchup, 3 teams vying for that last spot with 3 games to go, but i think KC has the line on it.

Chicago only wins 3 of our last 10 games and still manages to make it into a 1 game playoff. :o

That is absolutely ridiculous. All I had to do was win. KC losing 2 out of 3 to Baltimore? There is certainly something fishy there, i thought KC was a lock. After my long streak, my team decides to go 2-4 in the last 6, talk about a choke. I can't figure it out. Oh well, there is always next year.

Well, the team I thought I had the best odds against managed to smash me in five games, and most weren't that close. So ends the SD career of hbomb. Just likeit started. An AL pennant and nothing more. My career in the BHL ends like this:

Playoff appearances: 8 - 1950, 51, 52, 53, 54, 55, 56, 58
AL pennants: 7 - 1950, 51, 52, 54, 55, 56, 58
AL Championships: 3 - 1950, 51, 54
WS Championships: 0

I have enjoyed allmy time and the compitition. Good luck to all in the future. And good luck to KC and Meathead in the WS!:)

hbomb,

It was a pleasure having you in this league. Even though I never faced you, you were a great competitor and represented the AL well.

Congrats to both the Meatheads and the Canaries. Now, Meathead, go ahead and win it for the NL.
