Kiner Enters Final Game at .402

September 07, 2017 at 06:00PM View BBCode

Having already broken the single season record for hits (currently with 257) and having achieved the 50 2B, 30 HR, and 150 RBI milestones, Byron Kiner enters the final game of the regular season with a batting average of .402, which will also break the Cesar Cedeno record of .392 by Igi Loyala in 1951.

Kiner could weather an 0 for 4 performance and still come in at .39969, which rounds to .400. Going 1 for 5 would put him at .40062 (.401). An 0 for 5 performance, however, would put him under at .39907 (.399).

The question is: Will Kiner play?!

Going into the final day of the season in 1941, Ted Williams had a .3996 batting average (rounds officially to .400) with a double header on tap. The Red Sox manager offered to hold him out of the lineup, but the Splendid Splinter adamantly refused and insisted that he play both games. Williams went 6 for 8 to raise his average for the season to .406.

...and he went 3 for 4 to finish at .404 on the season, adding 2 SB to land at 50 on the year for good measure.

260 H, 50 2B, 32 HR, 151 RBI, 50 SB, 1.138 OPS, .476 OBP, .663 SLG, .404 AVG

Wow.
