Hall of Fame Question

August 03, 2017 at 03:55AM View BBCode

I have been running the Hall of Fame in every league that I have been in. Now granted in one of my leagues I haven't been as active, but to be honest there hasn't been a lot of worthy retired players lately, but anyway here's the situation.

In every league I ask that when someone nominates a player that they put a link to that player for the league to see. If they don't do it then I always put a link when it goes up for vote. I also encourage the league to put some notable stats or other tangibles that could help that player to get inducted. Gold gloves, all star apps etc. Now that second thing is optional, but most owners that want their player in will try to explain or "sell" why their player deserves.

Recently an owner in one of my league literally threw a fit on the message board saying how that was essentially done as well as some other attempted insults. Now granted this owner has a very colorful past and hasn't had much success in Sim, but is it too much to ask for an owner to post a link to the player they nominate?

How do some of the other leagues do it? Just looking for a little feedback here.

I've run Hall of Fames for two dynasty leagues. In each league, we've had a simple rule: One nominee per owner per season. I don't care what the reasons are that an owner uses their nomination slot. That's up to them. Let the owners vote to decide if that nominee was worth their salt.

So, yes. I think it is too much to ask for someone to **have to** share the link. It was my responsibility as Hall of Fame commish to find the links and put them together in an easy-to-use ballot. I never got one complaint.

So here is how we did it in the Willie Stargell League and the Billy Hamilton League. During the off-season, I asked for nominees from the owners. One per owner. Then I created a ballot that included guys from the previous ballot who still qualified and the new guys. I added no information about the players except for links to their pages. It's up to the voters to do their research. It isn't up to me to do it for them. Owners held their debates and made their arguments in the thread of the post. Here's what my ballots looked like:

The 2010 Hall of Fame ballot is now live. The ballots will be open until the end of February (2015).

Please submitted your ballots in this thread. Simply list the names you are voting for. You can also debate and discuss.

Players receiving votes in at least 75% of the ballots cast will gain entry into the Hall of Fame. Players receiving less than 12.5% of the ballots cast will be dropped from next year's ballot. Players who fail to reach 75% after seven years on the ballot will be dropped from next year's ballot.

Please use this thread, if you like, to discuss and debate the merits of the candidates.

I ran the HOF in the BHL for years, it's a thankless job and much like MLB creates a great deal of controversy.

We created a minimum standard and then I would just prepare a ballot with all qualified candidates listed without any mention of accolades and ask for votes. I would also set up a "Hall of Fame" lobbyists thread so owners could pitch their candidates.

Pitchers

Must have either reached 200 wins, 300 saves or won a Cy Young or Fireman Award or appeared in 5 All Star Games

Hitters

Must have at least one of: 2,000 hits, 300 homers, 1,200 RBI, 350 SB or a career OPS above .825 or have won an MVP or started 5 All Star games.

We required a minimum of 4 votes to stay on the ballot and 2/3rds to be inducted.

Tworoosters that's very interesting. I would hope someone wouldn't nominate a batter with less than 400 Home Runs let alone 300, but I guess you never know. I understand that the Hall can be tasking sometimes. I have ran a Hall of Fame for 11 years in real time so I get that. In my old league which was the Charlie Keller league when someone nominated a player they put a link for that player. It just seemed common sense to do that. If they didn't then of course I would find the link for them, but most of the owners did supply a link. Also MOST of the owners would write up something about their player for the league to see and that was always fun to see how the owner sold their candidate. Some would go so far as to show playoff stats and their fielding skills.

I have asked the league to supply a link for the player they nominate. If they don't I will do that for them, but I guess I wanted the league to be a little more active in this process, but if you think it's too much to ask for a link then so be it.

Many hitters with less than 300 HR's get into the Hall. So if a guy hits .320, with a .390+ lifetime OBP, with 1600+ runs scored, and 500 SB's, he isn't a Hall of Famer?

I run the Hall - poorly - in four leagues and use the same basic guidelines for all. For what it's worth, [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/oldforum-viewthread.jsp?tid=325218]here are the guidelines[/url], mostly based on the work of tworoosters, as listed above, but with slight modifications.

In one league all the owners vote, in another we use a HOF Committee, and in one we have a Veteran's Committee to review the players who didn't get in.

[size=1]Edited to add:[/size]

In one league, using Retirement System 2, we've upped the career totals since good players are routinely active into their late 30s.

Mark, when are you going to put John Voyles and Hardy Prescott into the Hall in the HBL? :D

So your 500SB hitter is automatically on the ballot.

I would also think it highly unlikely a .320 hitter with a career OBP of .390 would not clock in at .825 OPS or a hitter with 1,600 runs would have less than 2,000 hits so your fictitious player would definitely qualify in one area and likely 2 more, but thanks for your comments Willy

Um yeah...I was quoting Pecker's statement about home runs only. I was not in any way commenting on your HOF standards.

It shouldn't matter at all what reasons an owner has for nominating a player for the Hall. It's up to the voters to decide, not the Hall of Fame commish.

I've run two Hall of Fames. And the process was simple [I know I've mentioned this to you in a different thread, but it bears repeating for this separate audience]. Each owner was allotted one nomination per season. Most owners didn't nominate any. Some owners would up nominating the same guy.

Owners did not have to justify their nomination. We had a 75% threshold to get into the Hall, and a 12.5% threshold to remain on the ballot. So, not-so-hot nominations got axed on their first ballot. If a nominee continued to get 12.5% or more but never 75% or more, he got the axe after 7 ballots.

The bottom line is it is NOT the role of the Hall of Fame Commish to weed out the good from bad. That role belongs to the voters.
