New player - draft values?

February 10, 2017 at 10:14PM View BBCode

Hey.

So I just signed up today and am awaiting my first ever single season draft. However, seeing as there's next to no easy accesible information about this game and no screenshot or anything, I'm curious about a number of things.

1) Is any position overpowered? Like will some teams actually win because they go all in on getting a QB 1st overall or is the team balanced enough to go for more diverse strategies?

2) Will I be able to make a pick, or will it be a blind draft where my values are all that matters in a randomly generated draft?

3) Apart from what I can read (and try to comprehend) on http://rules.simdynasty.com/index.php/Sim_Dynasty_Football_Game_Guide#The_Initial_Draft - is there anything I should know?

Thanks in advance. :-)

i'll deal with #2 first. it's a 'blind' draft, but the draft is executed based on your rankings of the players at each position, so you do have control over who you end up with to some degree. if you click on the position ("QB", "HB", etc) on the draft bid chart it will take you to position draft pool where you can rank manually vis drag and drop.

with regards to #1 there are many different ways to win. I know guys who win with pass-heavy, run heavy and balanced offences. I also know people who win with heavy blitz packages on D, and who blitz seldom. I also know owners who lose regularly with all of those strategies. there is no magic bullet.

imo, Execution is largely overrated outside of QB, K/P, WR and the OL. Potential is almost completely irrelevant in a single season format. I would also say don't be afraid to play guys out of position. if you have 3 G who are all significantly better than your 2nd OT then play one of them there. SS can play effectively at LB and so on.

good luck!

Almost completely irrelevant?

What if I want a player that is currently B OVR but only has D potential?

Will he drop in skills?

no. he just won't gain much of anything. but since, especially in a single season format, he's not going to even with A potential it makes little difference. for the most part I use POT as a tie breaker, nothing more. there are others who do things differently, of course, but in a single season league you aren't going to see huge improvement from anyone.

Well, I agree that potential is not very useful (almost but not quite useless) in single-season leagues, but I disagree that improvements aren't going to make much difference in a single season league.

I have seen players advance more than 200 ranks in the overall ordering many times from the beginning of a single-season league to the end of one. But the important thing is age. 21,22, and 23 year olds will improve a LOT more than older players: in fact, a 22 year old with F potential will almost always improve significantly more than a 24 year old with A+ potential.
