2024 JJL Draft Recap
March 15, 2017 at 08:36PM View BBCode
Hello again! For anyone new or for those reading this long in the future when all humanity has been wiped from the universe, this is the annual JJL draft recap! I will go through the picks of the first round and assign grades based on their fit with the team, talent level vs available talent and anything else I think is relevant.
Alternative title: I criticize all of these more successful teams than my own and tell them how they should have drafted.
All in good fun. Comments and insults are welcome.
1) Los Angeles Stars - [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?mode=player&playername=nobody&id=12428018]Ernest Borgnine[/url] - SP
Hard to argue with this top overall selection. Borgnine has the tools a #1 pick should - great control, good velocity and the bonus of A+ endurance. At 18 years old, he should pass the B- threshold quickly. He joins an already incredible young staff full of top 2 picks that will dominate for a long time.
ETA: 2029
Upside: A overall starter in his early 20's
Downside: Velocity lacks and he's more of a B/A+ starter
Pick Grade: A
2) Pittsburgh Choosen Ones - [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?mode=player&playername=nobody&id=12428052]Harry Johnston[/url] - RP
Johnston could have been a #1 pick if he was a starter, but instead settles in as the #2 amateur pitcher available. A overall is easily in reach for the right hander as he could max out at A+/B+. A C- rating is always a bit of a gamble, especially when dealing with a reliever at #2, but Johnston is young enough to reach a solid control rating.
ETA: 2030
Upside: A overall shutdown reliever - wins a few fireman awards
Downside: Control lags behind and as A+/B is still a fine reliever
Pick Grade: B+
3) Philadelphia Athletics - [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?mode=player&playername=nobody&id=12428008]Haruki Kawakami[/url] - 1B
Let's get one thing out of the way first: This was not a good pick. Philly has a lot of needs in their rebuild and there were several solid bats available. However, Kawakami is already on the trade block and his stay might be brief. With no pitching options worth drafting at #3, selecting a very good older player makes sense if a good trade for pitching can be accomplished. If that can pan out, this could be a great pick. The grade below will reflect the fit on his current team.
ETA: Now
Upside: Gets traded for much needed pitching upgrades, enjoys a nice career with a contender
Downside: Smacks a lot of home runs and retires as the A's reach contention status
Pick Grade: C-
4) Chicago Beagles - [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?mode=player&playername=nobody&id=12428009]Eiichi Omori[/url] - SP
See Philly's pick for a review on this one. Omori should not have been the #4 pick with all of those young bats and an expansion of the CP system. Omori could have a bit of improvement left and reach B-/A+ which ain't bad. Looking for that kind of pick makes more sense a few picks further down. ON the ohter hand, if you only want pitching, this is the right guy as the pool after this point only has mid-level talent.
ETA: Now
Upside: Makes B-/A+ and holds up as a #2/3 starter
Downside: Sticks at C+/A and is a #4/5 starter or bullpen arm
Pick Grade: D
5) Boston Red Sox - [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?mode=player&playername=nobody&id=12428016]Tom Blanding[/url] - RF
Blanding's ratings would look great if he were 2-3 years younger. Instead, his C-/C+ swing vs right handers at 20 years old looks like a B/A- as a young major leaguer. That won't develop into a middle of the order thumper bat. On the plus side, he's great vs left handers and will get A+ speed. 5th overall is a high price for a lefty platoon partner, but Boston is hoping that C+ PvR is on the high end and he can play every day.
ETA: 2027
Upside: Swing vs righties goes well and hits 6 or 7 vs righties and 3rd vs lefties
Downside: Swing vs righties doesn't go well and he platoon vs left handers
Pick Grade: C-
6) Cincinnati Blackened Blowfish - [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?mode=player&playername=nobody&id=12428046]Dave Munch[/url] - CF
Munch has the same ratings vs right handers today as the player selected ahead of him, but is 3 years younger. C+ power profiles well for a 17 year old and along with good contact, power vs lefties, and speed, Munch has a solid future. He's starting with enough range to make it in the outfield, although he won't be a great defender for the first few years of his career.
ETA: 2030
Upside: Middle of the order bat that plays great defense at a premium position
Downside: Starting ratings are on the weaker end and he ends up late to bloom, but should still be an everyday player
Pick Grade: A
7) Cleveland Tomahawk Chops - [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?mode=player&playername=nobody&id=12428014]Ray Pillette[/url] - SP
This is another reach for pitching (in the defense of these teams, pitching seems hard to get outside the top picks) in the form of a 23 year old high control player. B+ control is good to start with and it'll get into the A range but it will require some growing pains at the major league level. Look for Cleveland to develop Pillette for a year before seeing what he can do at the next level.
ETA: 2025
Upside: Develops A control and holds down a back end rotation spot
Downside: Stalls at A- control with C+ velocity and can't be counted on
Pick Grade: C
8) Detroit Robots - [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?mode=player&playername=nobody&id=12428032]Ralph Sadowski[/url] - C
The bot managed a good first rounder here picking up a good bat a premium position. That being said, Sadowski is a flawed prospect, but most catchers tend to be. Sadowski will be a very good hitter for his position but will be held back by lead feet. All together Sadowski is a solid pick in the mid-round especially for the catcher needy Robot squad.
ETA: 2028
Upside: Everyday catcher hitting for average and power
Downside: Can't beat the throw on should be singles, ends up a boom or bust type hitter
Pick Grade: A-
9) Minnesota Massacre - [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?mode=player&playername=nobody&id=12428010]Dennis Sanchez[/url] - 1B
This is a fun one. Minnesota either assumed someone ranked higher would have fallen to #9 or forgot to set rankings in the first place. Sanchez is currently available on waivers and for good reason. The 29 year old offers B everything. Without much hope for improvement, Minnesota cut ties nice and early instead of giving him development attention better spent on other players.
ETA: Never?
Upside: Last bat on the bench
Downside: Waiver fodder
Pick Grade: F
10) Colorado Stegosaurus - [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?mode=player&playername=nobody&id=12428050]Reggie Brown[/url] - CF
Brown and the next selection are very similar players. Colorado opted for the guy with a slightly better swing vs righties and a defensive future. Brown will make a very good center fielder with his A+ range. His C+ speed and C-/C- bat vs lefties are concerns. Looking at the rest of the draft, this is a decent pick that can be stashed away for 5-6 years and see what happens.
ETA: 2031
Upside: Solid CF with A/A swing vs right handers
Downside: Too slow and to weak of a swing to stick in a lineup
Pick Grade: B+
11) Brooklyn Browncoats - [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?mode=player&playername=nobody&id=12428066]Harry Crowell[/url] - 1B
Crowell is similar to Reggie Brown. Close in age and not an ideal prospect but both fit their draft slots. Crowell is weak vs right handers, slow and won't contribute on defense. On the plus side, he might end up one of the best vs left handers. At 17 years old he has time to develop those other tools, but like Brown, don't be surprised if he comes up only after he's out of options.
ETA: 2031
Upside: Great bat vs lefties, good vs righties
Downside: Platoons vs lefties
Pick Grade: B+
12) Washington Halos - [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?mode=player&playername=nobody&id=12428023]Bobby Swartz[/url] - 1B
An older and less talented version of Harry Crowell, Swartz boasts solid power potential but lacks any speed or defensive potential. At 21 years old with B and A power, it's not unreasonable to say he'll make A- PvR and A+ PvL. That's a good weapon to have, but his future is likely on the bench.
ETA: 2026
Upside: Bat develops enough to become a daily starter
Downside: Specializes in pinch hit duty and spot starts
Pick Grade: C+
13) Kansas City Monarchs - [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?mode=player&playername=nobody&id=12428024]Jim McManus[/url] - SP
KC jumped on a 2nd tier pitching prospect with some upside. McManus just turned 20 and has a ways to go. He could take up 4-5 years in the minors developing in the new system which could get McManus up to A-/B. Not the kind of guy that will lead a rotation, but it's a good pick with what's left on the board.
ETA: 2028
Upside: Back end starter
Downside: Long reliever, bumps around the league
Pick Grade: B
14) Miami Yams - [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?mode=player&playername=nobody&id=12428044]Steve Baker[/url] - RP
Miami jumped on an uneven pitcher towards the end of the round. Baker has D velocity and B+ control. The hope here is that the velocity can catch up and make him a C+/A+ or even B-/A+ pitcher. That's a rosy outlook but worth the gamble at 14th overall even if he falls short.
ETA: 2030
Upside: Gets some velocity and becomes a solid late inning arm
Downside: Tops out at C velocity and eats up a lot of middle innings
Pick Grade: A-
15) Seattle Steelheads - [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?mode=player&playername=nobody&id=12428069]Deacon Brinkman[/url] - SS
This is a case of going young as possible and stashing a player in the new CP system. Deacon Brinkman (winner of the best name in the draft) scared teams off with his C/D swing vs right handers. He's not fast either or particularity good vs left handers. On the other hand he won't be 18 until the off-season and profiles well on defense. He'll use all of his option years and them some to make the major leagues, but he has a shot to contribute.
ETA: 2032
Upside: Solid contact hitter and defender at shortstop
Downside: Bat doesn't develop and he ends up a defensive specialist
Pick Grade: B+
16) Colorado Stegosaurus - [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?mode=player&playername=nobody&id=12428015]Ed Milnar[/url] - RP
Colorado scraped the bottom of the barrel and came up with 21 year old reliever with a shot at contributing. At B/C he's not likely to make his debut before his 24th birthday, but at that point he could be looking like a A-/B- kind of player. In a draft that got shallow fast, this is a solid pick.
ETA: 2027
Upside: Solid reliever that can handle save opportunities
Downside: He's on the weak end of his ratings and narrowly cracks a major league bullpen
Pick Grade: A
