The defensive rookie of the year for the 1996-1997 season is.... *drumroll*

Looking at the Qb's Te's Wr's and RB's Gray is finally pleased to have s one of her players finally make the honour rolls.
Many say don't rush to get a running back in round 1. this can almost be a certainty. Conceived and born in Southern Greece while his father was on winter break from the saltwater Crocodiles off season he proved to the world that his fathers genetics were passed on to him.
300 - run attempts for 1477 yards and 10 TD's - 20 of 28 receptions for 278 yards and 2 TDs - along with 25 kick returns for a total of 630 yards. A total of 2385 all purpose yards and all without losing a step of breath.

1999-2000 Blizzard Award (Defensive Rookie of the Year)
My defensive rookie of the year awards will now be known as the Blizzard Award dedicated to our lost friend ffoursea.
The winner of the 1999-2000 Blizzard Award (DROY) is...

Scott Weinstock (CB, DAL)
During the 1999-2000 season, Scott Weinstock registered the biggest statistical impact in his rookie season last season. He only technically started one game, but as a frightening force off of the bench, he picked off six passes and ran one back for a touchdown. With an impressive 86 long interception under his belt, this is definetely a guy who might be deserving of some more playing time. The former sixth overall pick looks to have a long career likely full of many more interceptions as he tied for second place last season in total interceptions. Congratulations ggoforth and the Dallas Cowboys

I suppose as a reward for my work with the polls last season, I was asked to co-author the annual rookie of the year thread and asked to pick out a defensive player to take the crown this year. It's a bit harder to sort definitively through the rookies since there isn't a tab to organize players by age or anything so I looked as hard as I could through the defensive stats page from last season and picked the one that stood out most.So thank you very much geo for the honor of being able to honor someone like this in a semi-official way :). Let's get to the announcement.

Gary Patulski (New England Soviets)

Sorry if nominating a first round guy who was expected to do well is predictable and boring but when you look at Gary Patulski, Joey's pick at #30, you realize you don't need to sell the world for a top five pick to draft someone who can make an immediate impact on the field. Though we're limited by the limited amount of stats the game provides on defense, it's hard to deny Patulski earned it with his stat sheet. The man basically was a jack of all trades. 12 sacks, 1 Broken-Up Pass, 1 interception, and 2 forced fumbles mean that Gary Patulski, now 23 years old registered in every measurable stat on defense at least once besides scoring a defensive touchdown. With defenses like these and a running back like the Owner's Choice Award Winner, Ken Parsons, who needs a quarterback?

It was not easy to find a DROY from the 1998 season. Let's just say, in all measurable stats, it seems the old guard took a grip over most of the stats. Still, when it came to defending the pass, one rookie did manage to stand out in a year that was all about the veterans.

Louis Cannon of the Detroit Detritus!
The second overall pick of the 1998 draft, this safety hit the ground running starting fifteen games and accumulating five broken passes and three interceptions going for 29 total yards for 8 overall pass defenses. In a year where the rookies didn't do much on the grand scale, Cannon made his presence known last year making it all the more impressive. We salute you.

Usually I drag my heels trying to do these end of year award things, but there was little soul searching and analysis required for me to easily pick out the Defensive Rookie of the Year.

Congratulations to Kerry Coley (DE) of the Arizona Desert Shaman!
I remember right before the draft, Arizona asked me as I'm sure he did others who I thought he should take in the draft. He had procured the second overall pick in a shocking trade with Louisville and even then he was asking if he should go for an upgrade over former sixth round pick Harland Cruise.
In hindsight, I guess I was wrong to suggest that Cruise wasn't the problem with the offensive because Stauch has just been killing it over there this year but when I offhandedly suggested he take one of the rare defensive linemen in the 2000 draft, I had no idea that I'd be telling this story to point out the irony of the fact that now I'm naming him DROY.
This was not the usual hunt that it usually is to find among the very limited defensive statistics the game offers. I have been doing Defensive Rookie of the Year for 4-5 seasons now and have never had such ease at picking someone because while every statistic is usually dominated by veterans, Coley is the first rookie I've seen on the defensive category not only be in the top five of a category, but LEAD in that category. And that category is sacks.
Only started thirteen games in the regular season, Coley registered seventeen sacks, causing three forced fumbles and also breaking up a pass. With solid run covering abilities and the magical DE combo of pursuit, strength, agility and decent speed, this player looks to be a threat for many seasons to come. The scary part for 31 other teams out there in the league is that he's only 22 and can only become more skilled.

2001 was not a real break-out year for defensive rookies although the FHFL of the 21st century as a whole is becoming an increasingly defensive league. It took a bit of searching, but I've found a recipient for the 2001 Blizzard Award for Defensive Rookie of the Year. The winner of that award is...

... Shawn Harbaugh of the Anahiem Cougars!

In 2001 Harbaugh made the biggest impact of the defensive side of the ball for a rookie so far as the stats go. He finished the season with 10 sacks tying for the sixth highest total in the league that season. He also intercepted one pass as a Defensive End for 11 Yards and caused 1 forced fumble.
Congratulations Cueball and sorry that this is so overdue.

In 2002, there were a few bright spots in terms of instant-impact rookies but one stood above the rest and we're here a bit overdue to honor their play with the Blizzard Award for Defensive Rookie of the Year although it is a year later.
So, the winner of the 2002 Blizzard Award for Defensive Rookie of the Year Is...

...Jim Marone, DE, for the Houston Raptors!

Houston may not have had their best year in the 2002 season, but they did have an excellent first round draft choice in Jim Marone, an agile run blocking defensive end whom Houston was lucky enough to pick up in round 2!
What did Marone do to earn this high praise? Well, he has twelve sacks in sixteen games producing three forced fumbles. His sack total has him tied for third highest in this category for the 2002 season yet he was barely old enough to drink that year! Scary to think what the future will hold for this youngster.

The 2003 Blizzard Award for Defensive Rookie of the Year in honor of a beloved friend we refuse to forget, we're going with one of the best kept secrets coming out of Brooklyn. Drumroll? Dumroll.

Congratulations to Norm Pleasant of the Brooklyn Giants!
The 47th overall pick may not look like much at first, but while no one was looking he tied for the most defensive touchdowns last season (2) and, registered 3 broken-passes in addition to his five interceptions for 157 yards, tied for second place with Charlie Costello of Louisville. He also returned two of his five interceptions for touchdowns, a rate of 40%. Not bad for a rookie.

So we're here once again to declare the winner of the annual Blizzard Award for Defensive Excellence, otherwise known as Defensive Rookie of the Year. I've been inconsistent with a lot of my other forum activity but I make sure that one of these awards goes out every year especially as it is named in honor of the franchise of a former player we lost less than a year ago.

Bobby Wilmer, cornerback from the Chicago KnightCaps!
The fact that for the first time my defensive rookie of the year award is going to one of my division rivals is a matter of grave concern to me, especially when you consider that in his first year he tied for third-most overall pass defenses in the league with four interceptions and three interceptions making him a balanced threat in the pass defense game. Already on pace to do something similar in the 2005-2006 season with two pick-6's, it's clear that this second round pick is going to be a problem for teams (especially mine) for a very long time.

It's late as hell and I shouldn't be up but I'm eager to catch up on the vital awards from last season. As you know, this defensive rookie of the year award is awarded every year without fail (although sometimes late) in honor of our late dear friend ffoursea who used to handle a team called the Chicaco blizzard. In his honor, every season we take a moment to recognize the most promising defensive rookie from the previous season based on their measurable stats.

Ed Randolph, cornerback of the Buffalo Tigers.

Randolph managed six interceptions and eight broken up passes in his rookie outing. The 31st overall pick making the 30 teams that went before the Tigers rethink their scouting strategy. At the time of writing this he is already off to a similar start and his six interception total is higher than any other rookie's top recordable stat. Congratulations to shbo2 on a job well done in the drafting department much to my dismay as your division rival.

I got off-track with the Defensive Rookie of the Year Award (and so did geo with offense so I feel less bad :p) but here are my picks for the past two seasons. Forgive the lack of fanfare here but I'm just trying to get up-to-date. I did make the picks carefully.

Earl Ramsey of the Orlando Flippers. Ramsey earns these honors for tying for first place for forced fumbles with 5 in his breakout rookie year. Overall, Ramsney finished the year with 10 sacks and hopes to return to that form in the 2009-2010 season at the time of writing this. Congrats to Ramsey, Orlando and lowpfl on the win and the great 17th overall pick in the 2007 draft.
