Two Teams Come From Behind....Playoff Updates

May 08, 2016 at 10:13PM View BBCode

What a great 1st round of playoffs. Here are how the playoffs went for every match up.

New York vs. Baltimore

Baltimore had the clear advantage and it wasn't just about home field advantage. New York won the tie break vs Boston just a game before in an extra inning nail biter. New York was the clear underdogs in this series.

In Game 1 Baltimore got the scoring going early and didn't let up. They had a 17 hit output and they set the tone of the series with a dominating 9-1 victory.

Game 2 was a different story. Baltimore scored first, but New York answered right back to tie the game 1-1 after 6 innings. Neither team could get much of anything going and it was tied going to the bottom of the 9th. In the bottom of the 9th Don Baylor took the very first pitch of the inning over the right field wall and sent a devastating blow to New York. Baltimore now leads 2 games to none heading back to New York.

Game 3 was yet again Baltimore scoring early and often. They managed to get an 8 run lead on New York stunning the New York crowd. New York did try to claw back by putting up 7 runs, but never could get over the hump. Baltimore wins again and it's all but the crying for New York fans.

In Games 4 and 5 New York decided to show up to the show. With a dominating victory of 10-3 in game 4 and another dominating performance in game 5 winning 9-2 it seemed if New York may finally have some momentum heading back to Baltimore for Game 6.

In Game 6 New York struck first with a run in the top of the 3rd, but Baltimore answered with a run in the bottom of the frame. New York struck hard in the top of the 8th inning when they strung together some hits and managed to score 3 runs to go up 4-1. New York looked to be turning the page and were 6 outs away from forcing game 7. In the bottom of the 8th New York put Kevin Buffington on the mound which seemed like a rather odd choice by the manager. Buffington hasn't had that great of a season, but the manager had faith. The very first batter for Baltimore Vic Wertz sends a monster solo shot over the fence to make it 4-2. The manager decided to let Buffington continue to pitch after a long talk on the mound. He managed to get the next guy out. After that he walked a guy, but got the next guy to fly out. There's now 2 outs with 2 on. Next guy walks to make it 2 on and 2 outs. The manager still kept Buffington on the mound when he was clearly struggling with his control. He walked the very next guy now loading the bases. One more batter later Tris speaker doubles and clears the bases for Baltimore to go up 5-4 in the game. Of course now Buffington is removed, but after the damage was done. New York could never recover and won the series from what appears to be very poor bullpen management.

Tampa vs Oakland

The defending World Series champions struggled in the regular season, but they proved last year that they could win it all even after being heavy underdogs. This series was a great matchup and it did not disappoint.

In Game 1 Tampa got out to a 9 run lead and although Oakland tried to fight back Tampa won 9-5.

In game 2 Oakland had 3 errors, but luckily Barley Hoffman was able to pitch around them. He gave up 1 hit and no earned runs through 7 innings. That was enough for Oakland to win the game 4-2.

Game 3 was all Tampa winning 8-2 putting them back in the lead for the series.

Game 4 was one for the ages. With Oakland up 3-1 going into the bottom of the 9th, but Tampa threatened and managed to score with the help of an error by Oakland and a wild pitch by Oakland. Tampa tied it up and sent it to extra innings. Tennie Peters for Oakland hits a leadoff home run for Oakland giving them back the lead heading the bottom of the 10th. Tampa again threatened with a 1 out double and the crowd was starting to chant "walk off" "walk off" but it was not to be as Tampa put in a pinch runner on second only for him to get caught stealing 3rd base essentially killing the inning and giving Oakland the game. We are now tied at 2 games a piece.

Game 5 was another one for the ages. Tampa scored 2 runs in the bottom of the third, but neither team could muster up much more. In the top of the 8th Oakland finally breaks through by scoring 2 runs to tie the game and they would of had more had they of not grounded into an inning ending double play. This game went to the bottom of the 9th and this time Tampa got their walk off with Zander Schloss clearing the bases with one that barely cleared the fences. Tampa now had a commanding 3-2 advantage, but now it's back to Oakland.

Game 6 was yet another brilliant performance by Barley Hoffman. This time he went 8 innings giving up only 1 run and striking out 9 batters. That was enough for Oakland to win the game 5-1 and forcing a game 7.

In Game 7 Tampa came out fast scoring 2 runs in the top of the first, but Oakland answered in the bottom of the 1st with 1 run of their own. It would remain 2-1 until the bottom of the 6th when Oakland would tie it up. In the top of the 9th still tied 2-2 Tampa pushes one across the plate and now leads 3-2. They are 3 outs away from advancing. Tampa gets the first out in the bottom of the 9th, but Zest Grebeck wasn't ready to stop playing as he belts a game tying home run in the bottom of the 9th. Tampa threatens in the top of the 11th, but strands runners on 2nd and 3rd and can't push any runs home. In the bottom of the 11th the intensity grew. Oakland gets the first 3 men on base with no outs. Chick Galloway hits a grounder to shortstop. There is a throw home and he's barely safe for Oakland to win the series in dramatic fashion.

Houston vs San Fran

This was a highly anticipated series with 2 great teams going at each other. Houston struck 1st blood by winning game 1, but San Fran regrouped and won the next 4 games. Not much to say on this series as Houston never had a lead past the first game of the series and the pitching of San Fran shut down Houston the remaining 4 games. Houston could only manage 7 runs in the 4 games they lost.

St. Louis vs San Diego

In what should of been an easy series for St. Louis this turned out to be something totally different. St. Louis intentionally rested their players in the series vs San Diego to end the season because St. Louis wanted to play San Diego. Going into the series St. Louis had won 7 games out of 9 vs San Diego and matchup wise St. Louis wanted to play San Diego instead of Brooklyn. Was that a mistake?

In Game 1 St. Louis threw their Cy Young award pitcher in Chizu Itachi(which is Cheez Weasel in English). He didn't let them down. He almost had a complete game shut out, but his arm tired in the 9th inning and was charged for 2 runs in the 9th. It didn't matter as St. Louis won the game 4-2.

In Game 2 St. Louis struck first again with a run in the first, but then the wheels came off. San Diego scores a run in the 2nd and 5 runs in the 3rd to go up 6-1. St. Louis did claw back to make it 6-5, but couldn't close the gap and lost the game 6-5.

In Game 3 San Diego came out hot getting a 5 run lead. St. Louis managed 6 runs on 15 hits, but couldn't manage to stop San Diego and lost the game 8-6

Game 4 was a must win in the eyes of St. Louis fans. St. Louis came out first and scored 1 in the top of the first, but San Diego answered right back with 2 in the bottom half. After the first inning both pitching staffs buckled down and it remained 2-1 until the top of the 9th. With 2 outs in the top of the 9th, Hap Menosky comes through with a single to tie the game. They then stopped San Diego in the bottom of the 9th to take it to extra innings. The score remained that way until the bottom of the 11th when Stephen Vogt singled in the game winning run off of the fire man winner Roy Scoggins. San Diego is now up 3 games to 1 and things are looking bleak for St. Louis.

Game 5 St. Louis throws out their Cy Young winner again and he pitches another gem. He goes 8.2 innings giving up 2 runs. St. Louis broke out with a 5 run inning and won this game 7-2. Only thing going for St. Louis is they are heading home, but they don't have their Cy Young pitcher to bail them out anymore.

In Game 6 San Diego scored first and got up 3-1 after the top of the 6th. St. Louis scores 1 in the 6th, but score 6 runs in the 7th and another in the 8th to put this game away. St. Louis won 9-3 on 12 hits forcing a game 7.

Game 7 is here. St. Louis is throwing former Cy Young winner Barry Evans. Barry was rocked by San Diego in their last outing so the crowd was a little nervous. MVP award winner Tiny Leppert was having a very rough series, but blasted a 2 run shot in the first for St. Louis to take the lead. Barry Evans was amazing. He pitched 8 innings giving up no runs and only 1 hit all game. The ball was left in the closers hands for the top of the 9th. In the top of the 9th Roy gets the first batter for one out. Next guy walks and next guy singles, putting guys at the corner with 1 out. Roy strikes out Tom Covington to put it at 2 outs. With the crowd on their feet All Star Bob Bell walks to load the bases. Bases loaded with 2 outs San Diego is one hit away from tying the game or worse. After a long talk on the mound they keep Roy in the game. The count goes to King Kongman who has already hit 2 home runs this series. With the 3-2 pitch Kongman sends a deep drive to Center field. The Centerfielder goes back to the track dives over the wall and makes a series saving catch to send St. Louis to the series win.

Barley Hoffman was given the LDS MVP award for that series, giving up 1 ER in 15 IP, and a WHIP of 0.87.
