D-Day 1987 Thoughts, Feedback, Discussion

Let's analyze and discuss our own drafts and what happened around the league. Interesting choices? Disappointing picks? Always the most active time of the season so let's try to get some gut reactions as it happens (twelve minutes and counting)

Real disappointing draft. Didn't get any targeted players. Should have spent more time ranking.

First thought is PIT had a good draft, filled some much needed holes,
interested to see how J. Davis SS pans out, A- skill set, also B+ in DT, DE,FS,
and LB

Having to wait until the 2nd round to make my pick, kinda disappointed that BA happened to be a TE Williams at #39, but shocked that he fell into my lap from position 25. So I guess its not all bad. He'll be starting since my starting TE is also my best FL.
With that being said, the rest of my picks could not capture a spot from my 45 members from last season, and Boston was bad the previous season. Looks like another long season and high pick for me.

I am very happy with how my draft turned out. I drafted as though I were in a rebuild phase because the team that I have come into isn't really weak in very many areas so I got guys that I can develop for the most part.
The biggest glaring weakness for my team as far as I could tell was the RB situation. Howie Gardener is a great back, and did a great job this season with over 1400 yards (lets not mention the 7 fumbles, he is kinda sensitive about those). As a result, I traded up in the draft and dropped a couple picks because the salary is still a huge concern and the number of picks I had were unworldly.. .That all being said... here is my personal rating.
Pick 1 Jim McCullough RB 21. A potential, A+ carry, A+ speed, A agility and A hands. The aggression is a huge concern as he won't fight for yards I don't think, and he will need some conditioning training and discipline training to get his stamina and attitude up, but comes in as the clear cut starter for the team. Howie will make a great situational back and the run game in Milwaukie should have a renewed sense of domination.
Pick 3 Bob Ball WR 21. Middle of the line potential but fast and agile and can jump over top of a good portion of D-Backs. Won't see a whole lot of playing time, but in the right situation.... he could drop the ball with those C+ hands... high gamble pick with potential for high upside.
Pick 45 Bob Long QB 22. Top QB on my board, did I need 1? No not really, however, the aquisition of him makes my future a little better off and depending on how he performs in the preseason he could secure the number 2 spot on the depth chart.
Pick 48 Percell Glover LB 21. Just for reference at pick 48 I got my 7th ranked player here... Not the strongest LB in the world, but has the agility and the pursuit combined with the coverage to be a solid back up from the start and a potential stop gap starter down the line.
Pick 67 Tom Hope WR 23. Won't get a hole heck of a lot better than he is right now, but love the potential big play ability that he brings to the table. Lacking the speed of a Lineman he won't move the ball anywhere fast, and won't break the 60+ yard gains for TD's, but he can jump to high point the ball and has the soft hands to bring it in. Also has the agility to make a few defenders miss and secure that first sound. Ranked 12 on my board.
I won't go into further detail. I feel like I got a lot of special talent, and secured 5 of my top 12 so A+ for Milwaukee all the way around. A few rookies never made it out of New York before they were cut from the team, but those that did make it have the opportunity to make impacts and will get the opportunities to step up when it matters and make those big plays. Looking forward to another fun season and hopefully I can turn around the mediocre performance of last seasons dissappointment and maybe win the division =)

Hopping forum already! nice to see that =) My draft was a successful for the most part. I mean... I did get 1 of my top 50 ranked players so there is that... being at the 30th pick of the draft was a little lower than i needed to really have a shot at the players that i was coveting most, but the corner i picked up was 6th on my board so definitely pleased to see him all to me at 30. Since my secondary still needs some buffering he has the opportunity to make a name for himself early and develop into a starter after a season or two. My focus this season was on defense. Having the highest offensive output throughout the season I felt that I really didn't need to focus on that side of the ball, but needed to shore up the defensive side. Got a couple decent rookies that could fill in and bolster the squad but won't truly know until i get to see them play.

I'm pretty pleased. The five players I got in the first four rounds were all players I had specifically targetting. My first first round pick was my #1 ranked overall player and I'm so glad no one noticed that that SS was actually a superb OLB in disguise.
Alphonso Elric (brother of Eric Elric =D ) was, by far, a steal and as described by Joey as the best player in the draft. He's listed as a safety but he's a little strength training away from being one of the most dangerous outside linebackers of all time... B+ pass cover, A- run cover, A- jump and agility along with B+ speed? Are you kidding me? He has one of the most successful IC conversion rates I have ever seen.
I'm now actually over-stacked on the offensive line, I snagged two A+ pass blockers and an A pass blocker. Two of them have weaker run blocking but I still have my two double A- pass/run blocking tackles to balance out of the void and moved Volvagia the tackle I stole from the waiver wire last year to center and am hoping I can push his B+ hands to A- since he has a delicious A pass block and A- strength.
Sebastian Sinclair also joins the Caps rounding out the linebacker corps with great strength and tackle and B+ run block to go along with Alphonso Elric's B+ run block and Hans Heidenreich's A run blocking (although he needs more tackle). I just need safeties and DE's in the next couple of drafts to round out the defense.
We got Christian Cross, an A+ throw power powerhouse in the fourth round, but his accuracy leaves much to be desired. He has some great IC development through school, but raising that accuracy to an acceptable level is an unlikely climb considering his potential and attitude scores. Still, we'll see. We also still need a running back and perhaps a natural center but the good thing about being overstacked in, of all positions, the offensive line, is I have a lot of trade bait on my hands right now. Or ridiculous depth.

Minnesota entered the draft hoping to get 2 to 3 pieces on the O after looking at future drafts for the D In the long term scheme of things.
Pick - 41 WR Billy Doink - great speed jump and agility. Excellent potential will have to try improving Carry and BT. I think he's an offesive steal (RB's are a dime a dozen) as he goes full season at age 21.
Pick - 51 WR Leif Garrete - A mistake pick got lucky wil make a solid backup WR and RB it's wait and see.
Pick 105 LT Tom Wired - As A backup his skill set is Just OK for now His Double A P/A can set him up to do Da Job. One issue 23 in Oct.
Next 2 guys a waste of breath. Roger Rogers may drill well on his issues.
My grade B- considering this was a season I was passing on.
first time I can't find any team to give an A to in this one. Interesting observation as a work in progress Lan and grubdagws nasty POT picks. Will be checking in on their development.
Good Luck in the season.

Saskatchewan had to get a QB prospect and got Dick Plunkett, team-ranked #1. http://football.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=3428600
QBs Long and Nichols and maybe some of the other QB prospects may turn out to be better, I don't know. I didn't care for the Age-to-Ratings ratio in that they're both 22 and mediocre in Accuracy, with Nichols having the better ThPwr.
Plunkett also has F Aggression, which I'm not sure how that'll affect his effectiveness. In one half of the first Preseason game he's 1-8 for 4 yards. But not because he's dink-dunking and missing, as he has three attempts of 20-39. But he can't hit a pig in the arse with a banjo right now.
If you add in he's named after one of my favorite QBs, Native American Jim Plunkett, he became sort of a Sim-crush instantly.

Plunkett was on my board relatively high as well, however, I felt that for devlopmental side of things that Long has the brighter future overall. Will be fun to track and see which one ends up with the better career at the end

Pick 28 DE Newbill - A- run cover and tackling with B+ strength. Probably not strong enough to play DT but will be a fine DE or LB. Will see lots of playing time and become a starter here in a year or 2.
Pick 29 CB Smith - Red letter in pass cover, speed, and agility. Will come in and be the #2 CB.
Pick 60 QB McMillen - Probably too early for him but only need him as a back up.
Pick 61 SS Ashmore - Can play SS or LB. Will see lots of time at LB this season.
Pick 72 WR Sestak - Nice skill set. Will be our #3 WR and see a lot of the field.
Pick 92 SS Kyles - Good skill set for this late of a pick. More of a depth player at SS or LB.
Pick 93 CB Benjamin - Good depth player for an aging Secondary.
Wouldn't call this draft great but we added depth to positions that we needed to. With a bunch of picks next draft, we are set up nice for the future. I'd say a B- draft because the lack of an impact player right away. These players should become starters when age and declines start on the current group of starters.
Overall not a top heavy draft just a bunch of quality players. Washington did get the guy I wanted at #9.

I also wanted Plunkett (best QB in the draft IMO based on his improvement chart and the fact that accuracy is the most important stat [hides Samwise Bishop, Les Hope and Simon Cross under a rug]). I was going to try and pry them from Robot but 1) I realized he probably had him ranked really high to get him in round one 2) His potential is only B- so who knows if he'll ever hit A- accuracy or not and 3 and 3) I'm not a fan of some of his tertiary stats. I could have easily kept my pick and taken Paul Nicholas but there weren't really any QBs worth taking in the first round and it probably would have taken a first round plus more to get him from robot.
I was shocked an A+ pass blocking linemen made it to the second round and Dick Plunkett didn't, even if the guy has C+ run blocking. He has A- potential -- one of the only guys coming out of the draft who was ready to start and had H potential...
Hans Heidenreich, the project from round two of last year just got his A- tackle to go along with is A run block and A+ pursuit, Sebastian Sinclair came out of the draft ready to go and Alphonso Elric didn't improve much his first game (0/1) but considering the rest of his stats, potential and attitude scores, I can wait for his A- strength. Once again, I'm on my way to having a ridiculously tough linebacker corps. This season might be another sucky one honestly, we still allowed too many sacks today (but then again, we passed way too much) but there is little denying that being patient and drafting all of these positions instead of trading for them has me set up with a great foundation for a long time. A few more defensive players, then I can grab my QB, RB and WR and look out.

The Feds have a take-the-best-player-available approach to the draft and it this year it happened to be another RB. 2nd round netted a CB. Two positions I really didn't need to add. I would love to trade a RB for a WR of comparable skill level if anyone is interested.
3rd rnd took another RB who looks like he should be a very good KR. He also can pass block and catch the ball so Im looking at him as a shotgun back.
4th, took a SS...this draft was uncharacteristically deep at SS. That's a position that is often hard to fill.
5th round was a WR. Not sure what I'm going to get from this guy. He is an A exe but only a B- catching. He's a great athlete with red letter speed & agility and B+ brk tckl. He's only 21 so Im hoping for some development.
all in all, not bad. Im happy

On the QB front I don't think the B - boys can ever be more than backups under the best scenarios and that will take a lot of sim luck (can't see them used full time today). It's the exe that just can't cut it. without the full skill sets being blue and higher and not being able to start right away has me wondering perhaps the best pick may have been soon to be 23 yr old Saladin Ontko he can even backup rb if needed and if scifi can pull some time (there is risk) I think he gets his A cookie in 2 seasons and will perform. A second round equivalent to highway robbery lol... Then Nichols should be able to get the bumps up in an already developed set of skills had him on watch since freshman. I would not panic over the D+ for 3 seasons but then again could be wrong on him, And the there is Long has the full season at 22 and pot/att look solid does he play???? and pull another 3 year tebow stunner????

The reason I passed on Paul Nicholas (the moment I traded first overall) was because of his horrid hands plus the low potential combined with the fact that he has A- accuracy... meh.
Les Hope was a fourth round pick, the best QB of the draft last year which didn't matter one way or the other because it was a terrible draft. Samwise Bishop was undrafted from the waiver wire. They both had B+ power and accuracy and both attained A- by the end of the year. They both have pretty bad aggression and execution and potential and attitude but if they hit A- accuracy I think they're tradeable or perfectly fine at #2 or #3 or 2 and 3 behind whomever eventually start. Christian Cross has the same issues but his accuracy is B compared to A+ throw power, but I doubt he'll develop. If the line is good and the rest of the team is good, I'll take a hit on blitz reads and overly safe passes for a #2 or #3. Sadly, due to Eric Elric's erratic play throughout his career in Washington including our best year (12-4) I've gotten used to building around erratic QBs.
Overall I'd agree B- is usually a throwaway, but you never know. Ben Reynolds played pretty well for us considering the bareness of our team in 1985 and all he really had to his name was A- power and accuracy. If I had a better team that year, who knows

I've always had luck in predicting QB's from developments to when their world shatters with nasty declines. Going as far as giving up 3 1st rounders in 1 league to get a 50K passer in the new code. the thing is they must have high B+ B+ TP/TA (prefer more)if you will play them every down it reds 9 of 10 times within 2-3 seasons as you get to strategy set him. What I look for is minimal amount of greens where it counts. 1 green letter I can live with not a pennie more (how do you get so much fixed? lol.but at all expense I avoid any exe below B/B+ It's of major importance to Qb's.. at least the way most of my teams get set up.
Question how do you determine the low B+ from the high B+ and so on ??? I only scout the Freshmen Qb's from day 1 to the draft too long a follow up trust me . SHHHHH. I won't reveal who is what lol.... Watchh out fo NJ Cindrich..... lollll

Actually, let's look at Sam Bishop.
http://football.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=3332715
He was an undrafted B- QB, formerly Dexter Cuff who you actually had last year. First of all, he's not a bad RB (88 yards today), secondly in spite of his potential and attitude, look at his ICs last year-- that's pretty darn good for someone with his ATT and POT. His hands are terrible, but I already got him up to C- accuracy from D+, his aggressiveness is C+, but I think that's a decent amount of aggression for a team that is not simply trying to win on the QB's back (another lesson learned from Elric). By the end of last year I was playing him in the shotgun a lot accidentally going long because I hadn't been checking my coaching settings after a while and it trashed his QBR but throughout the first half of last year in spite of my horrible line, lack of WRs and other skill positions and a terrible D, he was actually completing around 60% of his passes when they were short and medium and it was supplemented by the run game to keep defenses honest.
Here's Les Hope (named for what I will have if I ever end up having to use the third string anyway): http://football.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=3404709
Drafted in the fourth round last year. All of the QBs last year sucked but he was the best one at B-. Also has terrible execution, attitude and potential, but at the same time the few ICs he got as holder last year got him from B+ ThrwP to A-. Had he actually maxed out the fifteen minute playing time window for development you suggested, he probably would have developed even more. Sometimes you have to consider a B+ could be inches from A- and considering Hope was the top QB in that draft, though it was horrible, that's not totally unlikely. I feel 50/50 they could both go double A- on their throws, I'd rather have low aggression than high, and hopefully I'll have a line that is decent enough to negate the need for high execution and a lot of blitz reads.
It's possible, but unlikely. Not everyone has the "advantage" of having no choice but to play waiver wire trash and low picks for 2-3 seasons. Sometimes if you start someone with horrible POT and ATT every game, even though they will never become studs or starters, sometimes there are exceptions to the rule.
Paul Tillman my/Dallas's old QB was another example. I traded him because he had F potential, he had A- throwing power and A accuracy and he was almost thirty. As soon as he got to Dallas, his accuracy went A+ and stayed that way well into his thirties so sometimes, there are exceptions to the rules (not enough to base an entire strategy off of). Generally I go for potential and attitude, but sometimes you get surprises.

the draft was a complete bust. on the good side I made a few trades. I picked up Sonny Fredrick to upgrade my wide outs. picked up a linebacker Dexter Meme for depth. so all in all not to bad. ready to get after it.
