So I drafted this kid out of High School...

Based on GPA, Benjamin Bow graduated 732nd out of 752 students in his Senior Class. I figured the following might be a problem...

I scouted him and he could rake really well but didn't seem to be the sharpest tool in the shed, if you know what I mean. I asked him how he felt about becoming a Catcher as we'll have a spot for him at the big league level in Montreal about 5-6 years down the road. He responded, I kid you not, "Catcher, what's that?" I responded to inform him it's your teammate that squats behind the plate to, well, catch the ball that your pitcher throws. "Do you mean the Umpire?," he responded. Just shaking my head I said "you know what, we'll give it a whirl" knowing full well it'll probably take this stupid kid a good 5 years to half-way grasp the position. At least the kid can rake even if he is so dumb that it'll probably take him 7-8 years to fully grasp how to simultaneously squat and catch a flying sphere with a larger glove than he has been accustomed to using. In the meantime, I feel bad for our minor league pitchers that will have to deal with this goofball behind the plate.

Well I hope you set him up with a good financial guy. Since the bonus he will get for being the second overall pick should set him up for awhile after baseball. Now when Mr. Bow proves to be all hit and no field I hope he still is able to transition to RF for you. I hate it when 1st round picks tank.

The Owner/GM/Coach of the Hosers makes his living investing in securities so perhaps he'll be able to help Mr. Bow out as a financial advisor.

Unless I either (1) give up on him, (2) improperly develop him, or (3) trade him away, there is nearly zero chance that he won't be a stud in the middle of the Hosers lineup for a very long time. #1 and #2 won't happen, #3 might as I tend to like to trade every once in awhile ;-)

I'll do the roleplay thing and suggest you don't want stupid calling pitches. ...

but since this is ABE's world we know that doesn't matter.

In ABE's world I convert guys to Catcher quite often, but I usually like to have B or better arm with bad range, just to be perfectly sure he's going to max out his arm.

Usually by the time they are OS23 they have at least blue-letter Catching skill.

That's my biggest concern... his arm. I don't think I've ever had anything but A+ behind the plate. Anything less is just asking for trouble, IMO. I hope he gets there. If not, I've lost a handful of seasons of position change development which isn't a major hit to my minors as I usually only draft and train pitchers. I had to make an exception as the recent draft was weak on pitching and Bow should be a monster (although a slow monster).

Bow has 3 improves at catcher so 15% of the way there. Not great but that's about what is expected 2/3 through his first season.
