Dilemma

July 13, 2015 at 01:35PM View BBCode

OK you great group of outstanding citizens! I have a dilemma that I would like some input from other owners on. I traded for Indiana Smith because I NE refused to give me the first overall pick (grudge being held until I sack him 8 times in our match this season) and through three games he has posted a 59.0 QBR, 50% completion, 237 yards and 2 INT to 1 TD. Horrible stats for the projected starter for preseason games where he isn't even facing the best teams have to offer.

On the flip side, Pick 70 overall Abdul Steponovich (most likely planning on changing that name) has a 96.1 QBR, 63.3% completion, 326 yards 0 INT and 2 TDs.

Abdul's accuracy is a B+ which means a potential risk every time he takes the field, however, his performance through the preseason has far surpassed the "better" QB by far. Even with a C+ execution he has consistently outperformed Smith every week and quit frankly the performance has been noted by the ownership but there is still a question about whether he should enter the season as the starter or if i should stick with Smith?

How are you playing Smith? He's definitely a YAC kind of guy. You also gotta consider Abdul is probably not playing other people's first string defense. If you're like most people, you're playing Abdul in the second half just as the opposing team pulls their starting D. I've played the first string through all my preseason games but it was because I needed data to evaluate my aging roster and ended up loosing a CB to injury-- something most people are trying to avoid (remember how Paige Wingate was out for over a month two seasons ago with an ACL he got on the first snap of the first preseason game in 82?)

I glanced at the box score. I think benching Smith is a mistake. Any QB can get lucky, but I see wide passes, incomplete drives, good running which is kind of carrying you and some great receivers catching short/med passes for a lot of YAC which is where most of Abdul's yards are coming from and that has a lot more to do with accuracy than power. Smith should be your guy. If you've only played him for half of the game you're gambling an untested inaccurate QB who threw what amounts to two full games over a QB who played a really great season last year and barely missed the playoffs.

and you're judging by Orlando who doesn't have the worst D on Earth but isn't known for it even though he's playing starters. Plus, you paid a lot to get Smith on your team. I'd designate Abdul as a holder maybe and give Smith the benefit of the doubt for at least a few games before you pull him for a rookie although Abdul is nice to have in the pocket considering Smith is nearing 30 but Smith probably hasn't even peaked yet. If he gets a little more accurate, you have one of the most dangerous signal callers out there- he already has an arm canon.

Your rookie only threw a moderate amount of passes and is still only at 53%. Play him for the rest of the preseason game at least before you decide. You may not like what you see wheras Smith is a guy you already know can play four consistent quarters of football. NE was one win away from the playoffs.

fair enough. Thanks for the input. In other news, you should check on the Virginia Vendeval's QB's game today (jim brown league). Halftime just hit and he is already at 347 yards passing with 3 TD's

Smith is horrible! I'll give you a 4th rounder for him.

Smith is long-haul guy. You've got a good backup in Gray. Put Steponovich on the inactive list and hope he generates some improvements this year or until you're out of the playoffs and you can put him in to potentially get some extra ICs.

Michael Gray is a great quarterback. If anything I'd be deciding amongst the two of them rather than the rookie

It's Preseason. You can count on stats being all over the place weird. You go with the best QB and save the rookie for later. You start Abdul in a in-season game and he's going to get destroyed, barring he's playing a really terrible Defense. And even then.

Well, I'd like to think so, too. But Gray's C Execution is a real issue. He's a career 67.9 rated QB and that's probably a big reason.

Vonjoho - This is why you can disregard what happens in the pre-season (from another league I am in):

Pass by Chris Karras is completed to Cliff Allen for a 35 yard gain.
Touchdown for the Colorado Dimebags!

Karras is a backup wide receiver on my team. Ironically, it was the only score of this pre-season game in which my rookie QB with B+/A- was 19-31-158-0.

Well, i stuck with Smith out of the gate, and to this point in the season he is one of the top QBs. Montreal is hurting his rating and yards but he is still maintaining fairly strong numbers considering
