Performance of position players vs. different skill sets

Hi,

I was wondering: Is the success of a batter against a hitter dependant on the skill distribution?

Say you have two statistically equivalent pitchers P1 and P2, one P1 high velocity, medium control, the other P2 bad velocity but good control.

Statistically equivalent means they average the same ERA, WHIP, W/L etc. Obviously the high velocity would have more strikeouts, the other less walks, but still you get my drift.

Now take two batters B1 and B2. One is a powerhitter, the other a high-contact hitter. Would the hitters have better numbers against one of the pitchers? That is, would maybe the powerhitter hit the high-velocity guy better, and the high-contact hitter the high-control pitcher better? (In the sim, not in real life.)

Just wondering. Guess it would be pretty hard to collect data on that, since you don't get that kind of info from the available stats.

If there was a difference, this would make for interesting lineup tweaks in playoff games and other potentially important matchups.

Regards, F.

I think there is a difference that Contact hitters will hit better vs Control Pitchers, however in practice, I usually find my best hitters are always the best option in any situation. Maybe there's a guy on the bench that might be a slightly better option than your #8 hitter, but not really significant.
