ideas for minor changes that i'd really love

October 22, 2014 at 07:01PM View BBCode

every so often I run across (what seems like) a fairly minor thing that would increase my enjoyment more than the (seeming) amount of work they would require. here's a few:

1) Fullback runs: I hate them. most of the time, my FB is there because he's a good blocker, not a good runner. I'd love an option to turn this off/on depending on what my FB can do. same with the QB.

2) Nickel auto passdefend vs Shotgun: with the new changes, defences no longer default to a pass defence when the opposition lines up in shotgun. this makes sense with teams being able to run in shotgun. but there are still some teams who pass exclusively from shotgun and who run exclusively from pro/I and now those teams are harder to defend than they used to be. I don't think this is an intentional thing, so I'd love the ability to turn this on/off. a simple toggle in the prefs that says something like "if the offence lines up in shotgun and I have a run defence called, 'remain the same' or 'change to deep zone/man to man' instead" would be great. a reverse toggle for pro/I into run defences would be awesome too.

3) Position group overrides on the draft board: this is an old one for me. I don't know how many times I would like to draft a couple of OL but there are players at each position I like. so I can set C/G/T to 1 each and risk getting 3 or set one of those positions to zero and risk getting none. what I'd like is to be able to set each of those positions individually and them have an override that says "Total OL 0/1/2/3/4". I'd love the same ability for DL as well. even for DB would be awesome.

4) Split draft positions: this is an extension of item 3. HB/FB and FS/SS are completely different positions with completely different skills. there are lots of times I could use one but don't need the other (ie my FB needs replacing but I'm set at HB). again, I'm forced to set my position numbers and hope for the best. but if I set RB to 1 and I get a HB first, I won't then get a FB. if I set it to 2 I might end up with two FB, which I rarely if ever want. being able to split these positions would make for a nicer draft experience.

5) Position switches: I know this is high up on chris' list, but I'd love to have the ability to change a player's position at the beginning of the season, or coming out of the draft. there's no reason for [url=http://football.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=2804904]guys like this[/url] to be listed at CB, for instance. the system does a pretty good job but once in a while it would be nice to be able to do it manually, or for a change to happen automatically over time. (granted, this is not a minor change)

I think I agree with dirt on all of these suggestions. Hmmm.

I love 2-5 but hate #1. If you can turn off FB running you could just stick another run blocking lineman in that spot and get all of the benefit of it's blocking skill but not have any of the downside resulting from having it carry the ball in a big spot.

Since the majority of FB runs are up the middle if you don't want it carrying the ball late on 3rd or 4th down in a close game you can set up an advanced strategy play for outside runs to that should keep it from touching the ball.

you could, I guess, but that also means that I can't attack that part of the defence in those situations, which might be better strategy, depending on how roster match up. I hear what you're saying about a lineman at FB, but I can do that now anyway. [url=http://football.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?displaytab=stats&id=2617422&statsyear=0&statstype=reg&statsmode=rush&statsloc=all&statsweather=-1]this guy[/url] has been my starting FB in the ESFL since I took over the team 5 seasons ago. making OL ineligible at FB shouldn't be that controversial a move and it would seem to be a better way to deal with that issue than forcing me to run the ball with a guy I don't want to use in that role.

From my observations the sim creates either guys who are great blockers but can't run the ball a lick or guys who are mediocre blockers and just Ok runners. If an owner doesn't want a lousy runner carrying the ball they should put in a better runner, having the ability to turn off FB running gives owners all the benefit of the great blocking but none of the risk of having its lousy running skills hurting them. IMO this is a case of people wanting to have their cake and eat it too.

Theyre also giving up the ability to have a mr inside/ mr outside tandem by doing it too. If we had the ability to go to a one back set, that might be different, but we can't. Although Daryl Johnston, one of the better known blocking fullbacks in recent memory, average a mere 1.5 AT&T per game over his 11 year career and if you take out his rookie year it's closer to 1. so it's not like nfl teams don't use the fullback exclusively as a blocker. I guess for me what it boils down to is that I should be able to choose who I hand the ball off to.

I wouldn't say he was used exclusively as a run blocker, he did have over 2,000 yards receiving on 294 catches than of the backfield for his career so they did get him the ball around 3X's per game which is roughly how many times my FB's carry the ball on average and I tend to run the ball quite a bit.

Oh and I'd love a single back set.

would you prefer me to say they used him exclusively as a blocker on running plays? because that was sort of the point being made.

Yes. Despite always hating the cowboys I always really liked Johnston because of his ability to catch the ball to go along with him being a standout blocker. Sam Gash would have been a better example of a player who did pretty much nothing but blow LB's the fuk up. :D

I always like him for that reason as well and as a cowboys fan, he was top of mind. gash was probably the guy I was trying to remember and couldn't. which is sort of the point for a good fullback, I guess.

I hate the Cowboys, and Jerry Jones even more.

As for the FB, mine average between 1 and 2 carries a game so its not really an issue for me. But the advanced playbooks are coming and then you´ll be able to design anything you want.

To that point, OLs and DL´s are used as FB´s in short yardage in the pros, I dont see why we couldnt do it here.

I would like to see a button in advanced strategies that would enable/disable ALL plans at once(same with the delete button). I would also like to be able defer on the coin toss. The only area in which AFE seems to cheat for me and it has to be the coin toss. In most cases I would rather get the ball first in the second half.

I would really, really, really like to see this happen. I'm getting killed* by teams I should be destroying because I know that they only throw from shotgun but my defence doesn't.

*- 'killed' might be an exaggeration. it's frustrating though. we've actually made these teams harder to defend.

1) This will have to wait until playbook editing arrives; same with QB runs.

2) This will probably be handled through Advanced Strategies, with "offense formation" being added to strategy triggers. Interesting thought: Should "Opposing team" be added to strategy triggers too, so you can create strategies specific to a particular team? Or allow zones to auto-load a specific strategy set for a specific opponent, rather than making you watch the schedule and load the strategy you want? Or does this make the game too easy for absentee owners?

3) Somehow this dropped off my list. It's actually more work than it sounds, but its not impossible, either.

4) This will probably stop being an issue when I go to live drafts.

5) This is coming.

shbo2: More sets are coming, but they have to wait for me to dismantle more of the "matrix" code and do more live calculations. The issue of course is doing this will throw the balance of the game way out of whack.

jbzomal75: Enable/disable all shouldn't be hard. As far as defer, it wasn't an option in the NFL when the code was first written. However, since the play-by-play does not specify who won the coin toss, the captains on the field could be deferring already. :)
