Draft

May 14, 2013 at 09:02PM View BBCode

I don't know if it's just me not being familiar with the number ratings, but this looks like one of the worst draft classes I've ever seen.

It's definitely not the worst I've seen...but I am very glad I'm picking first haha

It isn't the WORST... This is a draft that is going to take a lot of work ranking. Now with that said if anyone just cannot stand to be holding a late 2nd... I would take it on the cheap. Now if you are looking to fill a hole in your big league lineup... no the is not the draft for you.

Agreed. There are definitely a lot of projects. These are the kind of drafts I really like to play with.

I have a draft model I use that projects ratings through age 23 so that I can compare the players on equal footing. I've used it for over a hundred seasons. I've had to modify it slightly for this numbers league, but it's even more accurate now.

Usually a draft will produce 1-2 players with 76+ ratings by age 23 and 6-8 more 68+ players. This draft we're looking at has zero 76+ players and 2 68+ players. One of the worst I've seen.

All the top young picks are flawed. Looney is the best pure hitter, but that speed will be a problem. This is exactly 1 pitcher that 1 would consider major league potential and he would only be a MR2 at best.

It's a weak draft, but you've got some seriously high standards... Both Moyer and Pasley will be pretty good

Fair point. I may need a few go arounds with this number ranking system until I'm comfortable. I hate Moyer though. Think he'll barely get into the red by the time he's 30.

Powers is pretty can't miss.

In this type of format, you also shouldn't feel pressured to have a prospect hit 76 at a certain age. Due to the strength of farm systems, even top prospects can take a bit longer to season.

There are about 12-13 guys in this draft that will eventually become serious contributors. Maybe more if the RNG gods play nice.

Moyer should end up around 81/81 or 82/82... he should have a very nice career

So how did you fare?

I feel pretty good about my two first rounders and my 2nd rounder. Very surprised that PIT essentially threw away the 4th overall pick.

Pretty happy with what I got.

Slaton should be A/A vs. RHP with A speed. Shipke could use some help but should be serviceable someday. Washington will catch a lot of improves over the next two years and should be a good 4th or 5th starter someday at least. the 4th guy I took got traded to fill some bullpen holes, but any time you get 3 major leaguers in a draft you feel good about it

I got my #1 and #2 ranked players. I wish I would have tweaked my list a little. CA Benzinger would have been a better choice than CF Bill Chapman. Could have been worse. Drafted for youth and hoping for good IC%. Might have to tweak my model a bit for this format.
