My team has 6 adequate starters (3 LHP and 3 RHP). I would use the 6th starter as closer. Also, a couple of opponents were stronger against one type of pitcher, so I would juggle the rotation to try to get 3 RHP or 3 LHP against them.
About half-way through the season I saw that 10 of the 11 pitchers had gotten saves and I debated putting my #1 starter as closer to get all 11. Finally when playoff position was assured, I put him in as closer and he got the save that game.
