At least I made it close AKA Pike vs Gnats
September 28, 2012 at 03:29AM View BBCode
Why does Washington bother with a punter? A guy in another league uses a QB to kickoff. Washington could do the same and save a roster spot.
10-0 and 37.2 points per game? Nasty.
Minnesota played about as good an offensive game as we could, 19-26 passing, no turnovers, traded punches for 3 quarters, win the time of possession by SEVEN minutes 33-26...and lose 35-24. If you would have told me before the game we win the time of possession, I would have been pretty happy. But by seven minutes?
The Washington Gnats take the lead, 0 - 7
The Minnesota Fighting Pike tie the game, 7 - 7
The Washington Gnats take the lead, 7 - 14
The Minnesota Fighting Pike tie the game, 14 - 14
The Washington Gnats take the lead, 14 - 21
The Minnesota Fighting Pike tie the game, 21 - 21
The Washington Gnats take the lead, 21 - 28
4th Qtr, 3rd and 10....Pass by Larry Flaherty is completed to Marq Sabb for a 9 yard gain. NINE.
The 29-yard field goal kick by Dan Brown is good!
The Minnesota Fighting Pike narrow the gap, 24 - 28
So at this point I figure the game is toast...four plays later...
The Washington Gnats increase their lead, 24 - 35
Three other drives stalled on:
a drop that would have led to a 3rd down conversion
3rd and two run that gained...two...but came up "inches short."
3rd and two pass that gained...two...but came up "inches short."
God I hate it when they bring out the chains.

When you take the time to dig through the initial draft and come up with crap cheap RB's who are red letter offensive linemen, it makes a huge difference. He also has fantastic strategies and a good instinct for how the sim works. I felt good about playing him close in our 2nd game (only losing 32-38) after getting blown to bits in our first encounter (3-59). I'm hoping for redemption in the playoffs!

I have more and more convinced that this game boils down to a good QB and coaching strategies.
I've tried season after season with RBs-OLs, safeties-DTs and LBs-DEs, and had some limited success myself, but this is not key anyway. QB aside, players can be residual to a team success.
I'm almost sure that there is some strategy that works whatever the personnel, I've seen that in every league I play in. Again, I had a fair share of success myself, going to the postseason often and routinely being among league leaders in some stats, but I've never found THAT strategy that makes you win pretty much every single game with pretty much any player you can drag onto the field.
I'm not saying this is exploiting a bug or anything like that, after all strategy IS what football is really about. It's just that the fact that it looks like this is happening even in a 32league, played by many of the most seasoned owners, means that this strategical "Graal" does indeed exist. To me, at least!

The QB is important, thats for sure, but winning constantly is about the details, which are there for everyone to see. All you have to do is watch the games. The best teams make big plays and stay away from mistakes because they have good players, no doubt, but if look deeper you will see they stay balanced on offense. If you cant run, (minimum 4.1 ave per carry) you will lose the turnover and field position battle and generally, the game, especially a big game. Honestly, offense is easy, you can see what everyone does, so the best teams have just copied each other and use the same strategies. Have a look for yourself at the top offenses.
The trick is not offense, it´s defense and I almost never see anyone talking about that. A successful defense gets your offense back on the field sooner, creates turnovers and holds the opposition to FG´s instead of TD´s. Its much harder to copy because you cant see what the other guy is doing; is the coverage, Zone, Man, Run Defense? There is no way to tell so if you can figure out how to stop teams it cant be easily copied. Again you have to have the players, especially at the key spots, but it starts with the defense fellas, once you understand that you will find that your offense is much more successful.

Strange but true Zeta fact:
Winnipeg has by far the highest payroll and is the only winless team in the league.
This at least proves that the salaries do not tell you how good players are.

maybe good QB is not as important as I initially thought. in BPFL, my team is doing surprisingly well with a 57 rating QB from the start of the season.

Squandered a 4th quarter lead in Washington. Unbelievable.
http://footballbeta.simdynasty.com/boxscore.jsp?boxscoreid=23397
1st and 10 Washington at the 50 and my nickel lines up against the Pro set...41 yard run later and Washington is set up to tie the game 24-24.
Clean penalty game for Minnesota then two crucial 4th quarter flags help a Washington drive and kill a Minny drive.
And how can an A+ tackler like Chris White miss so damn many tackles.
http://footballbeta.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=385562
I didn't keep track but it seemed like he led my team in missed tackles by a wide margin - the last being the final nail in the Minnesota coffin.
4th qtr, 1:09 left, 3rd and 2 on the 20 going in (ya I know he would have kicked a FG)
3rd and 2 for the Gnats, they huddle and line up in a Pro Set; the Fighting Pike line up in a 4-3.
Dennis Roberts takes the snap and drops back into the pocket.
Roberts passes to Hal Campbell at the MIN 10.
The ball is caught at the MIN 10 by Hal Campbell.
Campbell dodges a tackle by Chris White.
Pass by Dennis Roberts is completed to Hal Campbell for a 20 yard gain.
Touchdown for the Washington Gnats!
My QB threw 6 incomplete passes in the game. Three came on the last three passes of the game in Washington territory with less than 40 seconds to go.
pfffffffffffffft.

OMG that WAS/ATL conference championship makes the Minnesota loss to Washington look all the more frustrating.
bummer.

Washington is turning into my great white whale. Held 'em to 17 points in the '64 conference championship but couldn't get into the end zone - first time all year.
This Gnats WR, http://footballbeta.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=387797 goes 10/10 receiving against me....67 catching skills...10/10.
while my guy, http://footballbeta.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=383384 DROPS two 4th quarter conversions as well as failing to make a late TD grab...86 catching...2 crucial drops.
And while Mr. Roberts http://footballbeta.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=382576 is a heckuva QB, 32/36 is a bit more than one can handle when you sport DBs that have pass coverage skills of 95-94-83-83-99-95.
Sigh.

Note: Drops are a function of both Hands and Catching. I notice his Hands aren't so great.

I feel for you Splinter... again, I would rate the importance ratio between strategy and player skills at about 90/10 in this game. Balance is key, as Rich said. Still, a backfield with those coverage skills can't allow an 89% completion avg, on 36 passes, unless is being coached by a NYJets coach...

I think the QB´s are way too good, myself. 32/36 is an all too common number

You know, I think I just figured out what is causing this. Looking into it.

My guy with dropsies was 86 catch, 55 hands. His 10/10 guy was 67/59.

I would think EXE would matter primarily in route running but once the ball hits you in the hands I would think the other skills should kick in.
If you look at the career completion rate of the two WR's Neil (WAS) is at 71.2% and Duff (MIN) is at 69.5% with a QB in decline over those years.

Wild one today! Pike finally come away with a win by hanging a 41 spot on the Gnats and overcoming a 14 point 4th qtr deficit.

There's a big post somewhere on many of the things that execution affects; I'll try to track it down.
It matters most for kickers (and their holders), QB's, and the offensive line; it matters least (for now) for linebackers and safeties. Everyone else is in the middle.
