AJ Burnett pitches another gem vs. the Reds

He's definitely bringing it, this season. The move out of the AL East and into the DH-less NL Central has certainly been good for him. He's looking less like the disaster he was with the Yankees, and more like the solid pitcher he was with the Blue Jays and Marlins.

A.J. Burnett was superb Sunday, limiting the Reds to two runs on just three hits and three walks over 8 2/3 innings in the 6-2 victory.
He struck out seven. Burnett got the first two outs in the ninth inning, but Pirates manager Clint Hurdle decided to pull him after he issues back-to-back walks. Joel Hanrahan then entered and got Todd Frazier to pop out to end it. Burnett will carry an impressive 3.19 ERA and 1.15 WHIP into a juicy matchup against the Padres. Burnett was solid for New York in '09, in fact it was the highest WAR of his craeer but I just don't think he had the mental toughness to survive in that media jungle.

He's made $120 million in his career so I can't really feel sorry for him but he was made into an awful whipping boy by the NY fans and press.

LOL about Ed Whitson.

(Meanwhile, Eric Bedard also threw a nice game against the D-backs, this week. Take away a couple of starts when he got absolutely blasted, and he's also been a very nice pitcher for them this season.)

Even with last night's outing Bedard's ERA is 5.76 since June 1st, he had a great first two months but has really been patently awful since then.

It's too bad the injuries ruined him, there was a point in 2006-08 when he looked like he'd be a dominant ace for a decade .

He had those two absolute disaster games during that period. Take out those two starts (15 ER in 7.2 IP) and his ERA during this "down time" has been a much more respectable 3.988.

I know the body of work must be taken as a whole, but sometimes, pitchers just don't have it. And, while that is harder to forgive when a guy is getting paid to be an Ace, it is not unreasonable to deal with from a guy with a litany of career injuries, and getting paid $4.5 million.
