Small Waiver steps

June 14, 2004 at 05:08PM View formatted

You are viewing the raw post code; this allows you to copy a message with BBCode formatting intact.
I have code in place for when you waive a player, he will now show up on the waiver wire with a link that says WW Claim. I have added code into the game to remove a player from waivers when his date comes up. You can still freely claim these players, but I'm getting there slowly.

Still need to add things into promote/demote to handle those types of waivers.

Basically, we will have three types of players on the Waiver Wire. Free Agents, players who have been recently waived, and players that are out of options that have been demoted to the minors. I need to come up with a way to distinguish these three types of players on the waiver wire screen. Any ideas?

list their names in different colors?

That's a good idea, I'll use colors.

Okay, I put in the claim processing stuff (or at least a first attempt at it) for guys who are waived off your team that other teams want to claim. Try it out by waiving some guys and claiming them.

Doesn't work quite yet. I tried to claim Fred Mercado for betauser in short term league and he didn't get placed on my team when his waiver date came up. Oh well, will have to look into it more.

Okay, I have my first claim go through successfully. Just added in code to add the news for when the player has been claimed by your team.

I changed ST Beta to use a 2 day WW window to speed along the testing.

Right now, the team with the worst record will get the player. I'd like to add the logic so that if it is the first 30 games of the season, it uses this season plus last seasons standings. Not sure how much logic I want to add in for the beginning of 1950 - could overcomplicate matters.

I added two things to the player card. One that says Option Years which says how many years the player has left to freely move between the majors and minors (the current season is included in this calc). For players drafted in 1950 who are under 27, it goes off of their age so it may not be 100% accurate in terms of number of seasons.

I also added ML Service time to the player card - then realized the game code has been tracking it incorrectly (it was counting time spent in the minors, I have corrected this).

Yeah, keep in mind that in 1950, most of the guys on the waiver wire are pretty much trash anyway. I don't think it would hurt to just have the player go to the team with the worst record.

Just added a change to the promote/demote page so that the Minors part of the dropdown is shaded light red if the player is out of options. Going to have moovolong do something similar on depth chart.

Okay, have a first version (aka probably broken) version of the option system up and running. If you try to demote a guy that doesn't have options left, he'll get reported in the news as "designated for assignment". He'll sit on the waiver wire for a few days, and if he goes unclaimed should return to your minors.

I haven't tested any of this part yet - I have to run out for a bit tonight, hopefully can resume with it tomorrow at some time.

There is a problem for the pitchers waiver wire section. Under claim date, you see the date for the guys in red but it shows the position for the other guys. This caused all the other rankings to be shifted. Am I the only one having this problem?

Under service time, what is the difference between the number in parenthesis and the other number? The guy I'm looking at shows 2(3) and he's played 3 years. What does the 2 mean? I didn't see the answer above and I'm sorry if I'm blind...

I demoted a veteran (out of options) and put in a claim for one on the waiver wire, then I put in a claim for him as well (the player I just demoted), since my team has the 2nd worst record I will most likely get him back. I think this current system would allow bad teams to loseforthe first month of the year then stash away veterans in the minors - since when they demote them they will have the worst record and will be able to get them off waivers and put them in the minors.

I don't see any way to take a player off options, that is, after demoting his trying to promote him back to the majors before his time on waivers runs out so you don't lose him. I could see teams doing this if they were hit with injuries and needed the player again, or if claims were put in for the player and they would rather keep him in the majors than lose him. For the second part maybe you should only be able to repromote players if no one has already put in a claim on them?

Maybe preference should be given to the old team if they want to claim him back?

The service time is years (days). This is how its usually displayed for MLB in things like team media guides (BTW you're not a true fan until you get your team's media guide).

Is there a better way to display this to make it easier to understand?

How about once your 30 games in, ignore last season's standings and use the standings in place at the beginning of that game week? Every 7 games, reset the order, and after every successful claim, rotate by one so everyone gets a chance.

In fact, it should be this way the whole season, and just use last seasons standings for the first 7 games. For 1950, use the reverse of the draft order.

I was just making a trade offer, and I noticed that COLOR CODES were not put in place yet for this page to warn me which of my players were out of options. Color coding should also be put into place for the Trades page where we select the players we will trade, demote, or waive.

There is that rule, but that is more done at the end of the season, when they run players through waivers so they can trade them after the trading deadline.

The spirit of this is when forced to make a roster move, you need to make a hard decision & potentially lose a veteran contributor. I can't recall anyone withdrawing a waiver midseason and reversing the roster move. The person they are usually demoting to the minors (& must pass through waivers) is a veteran who is a AAAA player. Too good for AAA, not good enough for ML.
