Addition to Advanced Strategies

May 26, 2012 at 11:56PM View BBCode

I was just watching a series where the offense had the lead and the ball on its 25 yard line with 1 minute left. They called 3 run plays but where "hurrying through the huddle".

We could better control what happens there if we add a tab for the huddle speed on the new Advanced tab in Strategies. It would let us better control what to call depending on the score, field position, down and distance.

Three new options on a drop down tab

1. They huddle and line up

2. They hurry through the huddle

3. The take a long time in the huddle

Or just add a No Huddle option.

You would still need the other options to be able to cover all situations, but the no huddle would be a nice addition too

The problem with that is some people will No Huddle through the whole game, and I can't allow that until I have the proper penalties coded for someone who tries to do that. Plus, we'll have Madden-style games with 160-170 offensive plays per team.

I understand that, Chris. Could we do it under the standard parameters, where you can only hurry through the huddle with 900 seconds left in the half or game?

The key is the 2 min offense. By being able to control the pace of each play we can get much more realistic play calling and clock management because the you?ve added the "Score Difference" "Down" and "To Go" parameters.

Right now if you are in your 2 min offense you are automatically in "Hurry huddle" or "let the clock run out" based only on field position. But now that we can set the mode based on these additional parameters we need to be able to set the pace as well.

Example

If I am on my 30 with 1 min to go and the score tied I can go fast huddle to try to score. But if I am in the same position with a 14 point lead I can just kill the clock by running and using slow huddle.

If I am on my 30 with 45 seconds to go and its 2nd and 2 I can hurry up, but if itīs 2 and 20 I can slow down and run out the clock. As it stands now you would be in hurry up even if you are running the ball

This new screen offers much more control, adding the huddle setting makes it even more realistic.

There is one key thing I need to add before I can expand use of hurry ups and no huddles: In a true no-huddle, the play should require you to use personnel already on the field with no substitutions.

But I'll take a look at this and see if there is something I can do with it without requiring the new engine.

Thats awsome, thanks

A good way to prevent abuse on this matter would be a stamina-related performance penalty, which would be automatic in the no-huddle, since teams can get on only with the guys they have on the field, as you said.

Interesting point but if we are trying to be realistic the no huddle affects defensive stamina more than offense stamina in real life.

Maybe the solution is to allow the defense to key-in more when the offense is running no huddle. Itīs not a perfect solution because a pro offense has so many options, but itīs something. Of course we would need to make the Keyed-In more effective than it is now, because, at least in my eyes, it makes almost no difference right now
