Advanced Strategies
May 17, 2012 at 06:26AM View BBCode
NOTE: THIS IS VERY PRELIMINARY!
An Advanced tab is now available under your offensive and defensive strategies.
These strategies are not yet used by the game. I am starting on that portion now (which shouldn't take more than a day); in the meantime, though, I wanted everyone to bang on the interface.
These work like inbox or firewall rules. The sim compares the current situation to each
enabled rule, in order, from top to bottom. The moment it finds a match it picks from the four selected strategy options and stops looking at any other rules. If no match is found, it starts going through your regular zone strategies. Thus, it is possible to write a rule that prevents your zone strategies from being used at all.
When you first go to the page, there will be a single blank rule. If you add plays to this rule and save it, the page will reappear with the new rule and a new blank rule. Right now there is no way to move rules between teams or recover deleted rules, but there will be before the feature is released.
This is step 1 of advanced rules. Step 2, if step 1 isn't enough, is to allow the creation of custom zone tabs, but this is a lot harder to code.
Please note that the blank new rule is pre-set to encompass almost every situation! If you were to set the "to go" upper limit to 100 and set 100% for Pass Short, your team will do nothing but throw short passes the entire game. Obviously, the Advanced tab can open up new frontiers in tanking the likes of which Sim Dynasty has never seen, but i don't know any way around that other than not giving people advanced strategies. People ARE going to get themselves into serious trouble messing with this feature.
Anyway, please bang on this and let me know if it gives you enough flexibility, if it's understandable, or any other feedback you may have. And once again,
these strategies are not yet used by the game but they will be soon.

A note on advanced strategies: If the team is transferred to a new owner,
all advanced strategies disappear. This is to prevent the new owner from being able to "steal" a lot of hard work from the prior owner.

Hi, the first thing that came to my mind is short yardage... anyway, it looks pretty understandable to me, and I can't wait to see it playing.

Note that you can create rules at this point, they just won't be used by the game.

Looks good, Chris.
Is there a way to expand the size of the text boxes? Anything over two characters is not visible.
I will also have a look using my iPhone later this morning.

I'm excited. Time to get this team back on track and back to testing!

On defense it still looks like I'm flying blind if I can't choose to play a particular defense based on formation. Down, distance, quarter, time, etc are all nice but can we get the offensive formation listed as one of the criteria?
Also, on the advanced tab for offense when it says "yards to goal", I assume we're talking about yards to my opponent's goal, yes? Probably a stupid question but just wan to be sure. Thanks.

This is def very helpful at eliminating the head scratching calls during the game. This will almost certainly help those who want to put in the time to scout what the opponent does in certain situations and then add in the rules to counter.

OK, advanced strategies should be taken into account by the game now. You can use the Strategy Tester page to make sure your rules are being processed the way you intend them to.

I only added 1 Order, but the 3 times it came up during the game, it excuted what I had in Advanced Strat rather than in the normal Coaching Settings, very nice indeed.

Cross team strategy and importing from another team
All the regular strategies for the Beta and Epsilon leagues are shared. The special strategies are not shared, and there is not a way to import from one to the other.
It this going to be changed?

You are viewing the raw post code; this allows you to copy a message with BBCode formatting intact.

Of course, I just wanted to get people started testing the interface and feature. Things like sharing strategies will come before the feature is released.

What I need to do is find some way to give people feedback on which strategy was used on any given play, otherwise I'm going to be getting bombarded with "Why was this play used?" requests.

I don't know if this counts, but I'm doing Middle Run on 2nd, 3rd and 4th Downs with 1 yard to go for first. So far, everytime I come to the situation a Middle Run is called, and I don't have that option in my 3rd and 4th down settings, so I know the Advanced Order overruled my coaching strategy.

It looks like it's doing exactly what it's doing so far, so I need to start working on ways to manage these.
At a minimum I'm going to give you a way to copy strategies and restore deleted ones. Right now, all deleted strategies from the same owner go into the same "wastebasket" but I'm going to change this to make it team-specific to make it easier. What I'm thinking of also doing would be to allow you to add "tags" to a strategy and letting you perform operations on tags so you can enable or disable, delete or undelete them all at once.

Hi, advanced strategies doesn't work for me, it goes to the following error message:
SQL Error: The used SELECT statements have a different number of columns

Changes made today:
- Changed the database structure to keep a separate "deleted items" folder for each team
- Added a link to a page where you can undelete strategies
- Added a button to display the "blank strategy" rather than always show it (I think it was a bi confusing just having the blank strategy there already)
