the domiNATEors definately disapointed the city of brotherly love in 1999. John Tudor sped out of the city behind a haze of rotten tomatoes. The middle of the lineup, with the exception of griffey junior definately did not live up to expectation in the playoffs. you just cant be expected to win when the starting pitching is that bad and the middle of the order doesnt hit.
The domiNATEors will look very different in the new millenium. To top prospects that play the middle infield, and a super star ss that has obviously lost a step. Catching will also be different. although the domiNATEors hope that Camnitz comes back for at least one more season. Ron Camilli and Roy Shepherd split time at second and have dilson stephenson in the wings. George Pedre will probably spell the word utility at worse in 2000 as he prepares to be the every day ss in the next 2 or 3 years.
Ron Blank has shown holes in the middle of the last few seasons, but seems to have a strangle hold on the closer role as no one is willing to push him aside.
The domiNATEors are hoping that Tudor becomes the ace he should be, and Amelung, Nichols and Johnson live up to expectation.
The player of the year is Johny Amelung. providing 1a type starting pitching throughout the season that John Tudor struggled. Johnson was a disapointment, but is simply to talented to not be given the opportunity to be the 3 or 4 next year. Nichols will be the other, and if all 4 of these guys pitch up to expectation the domiNATEors will be the favorites next season. Bob Barfield will be on the team, and has the pedigree to be another great sp in this mix, but the chances of him pushing dick metha to the bullpen arent great as few teams have had a more effective 5 starter than metha in recent memory.
The of is 3 deep of star players each has the talent to be an mvp canidate. If all 3 play to their talent the domiNATEors offense will be as good as there is. Ron Gleason continues to improve, but many believe he could still have a much bigger year than any of us have seen.
The disapointment in philadelphia is obvious and overwelming, but many people expect much more from the domiNATEors next year. If Smoky Palys lives up to even a small level of his talent Camnitz should be a back up catcher if he is back at all, but Palys has still not played at the high level he was expected to play and he is also nearing the downside of his career. The domiNATEors should be competitive next year at least, and if things break well they will be in the talk for the world series at the end of the year
