Beta Premium Initial Draft Thread

1st thought: Wow...I'm not the drafter I used to be..not a single 1st or 16th pick in the draft.
2nd thought: What happened to that idea that Chris had about making the bids move from increments of 1 to increments of 10?
3rd thought: I'm still not sure why we have that holder draft. We draft QBs (2x), Ks, Ps, and Cs all before Hs. The fact that I've never seen a center play as a holder (outside of this sim) is besides the point, but this seems like a waste of a draft round. I'd rather see this, combined with Round 37 (KR) as a "Special Teamer" round, where you can draft Kick Returners, Gunners, Kick Return Backs, Long Snappers, and holders. This allows players to put a bit more focus on those "forgotten" positions in that third of the game. Thoughts?
4th thought: I remember back when we created Beta teams with specific extreme strategies. I've always wondered what a team with a normal strategy but an extreme player design (all high speed offense and all high agility defense, etc.).
Positional Thoughts (mainly so we have something to look at later on as seasons progress):
OT: I'm curious to see what happens with all of the young talent (as opposed to the virtually nonexistent older talent).
WR: For all of the talk about receivers putting up ridiculous numbers, we sure didn't spread the talent out much...I'm afraid we could be looking at a bubble effect here if we don't have talent evenly distributed throughout different age groups.
LB: This is a position that, in my opinion, seems to have more emphasis on execution (experience) than many others--hence the huge number of veteran linebackers. Not too many teams have Brian Orakpo/Ryan Kerrigan as starters (and even the 'Skins have London Fletcher starting). Looking at this initial draft, I've got 1 guy over the age of 24 in my top 10 rankings--and that's not just because I don't want older guys. It's simply all that's available.
QB: This is a position similar to LB, in that it generally puts a lot of emphasis on experience and execution. This draft class is a much older group, with the youngest guy in my top 10 at age 25. It's going to be interesting to watch though, for sure.
CB: Lots and lots of youth at this position. This should be proportional to the WR group, and it appears to be, but we also saw what happened when similarly-talented corners went up against receivers in Gamma.
DT: Anyone else think that 16 A- overall (and one 22-yr old A overall) is a bit too much talent? Especially when only three are 26 or older?
Other thoughts people have (before or after the draft)?

I was looking forward to the draft until the bids were set and I saw how poor my stategy was. It also shows me how differently we all think about the game and what we go for.
I always thought [in baseball] that the game played about the same wheather you had a heavy or thin draft. The players fall into the same niche, it's just more difficult to rate the thin drafts and a thin draft lacks the 'feel good' factor. Now...
LET"S DRAFT!:D

I really can't believe my preferences were correct, I can't for the life of me understand how I would have had Reeves ranked 4th at QB but honestly I spent very little time on the rankings.

Congrats, TR.
I only got 2 or 3 eight or above. Don't know how you guys did it, but I feel used.

I left all rankings at 100. Didn't have time to do more, and the pace of this league will outstrip my ability to do much more than set lineups and let it ride.
Way less emotional investment.

I have a good, solid defense. Too bad defense didn't matter last time around ... :)

I still keep thinking about it... I change my mind back and forth as to whether it's a good idea or not.
3rd thought: I'm still not sure why we have that holder draft.
The "Holder" draft spot is your 3rd string QB, really; the point is to make the 3rd string QB somewhat useful by at least getting one with good Hands and Execution so he can be useful as a holder.

This would require some larger changes to the code... it's certainly not impossible.

For the first time in my draft history, I gave up on the QB category because I didn't see a whole lot of difference between #1 and #16. I sure hope there are more than just the typical 1 or 2 draftable QBs coming out of college each year.
I have two gigantic safeties rated 86 & 81 in strg.

I punted on the QB too. I picked at 15. All 3 of my QBs are basically interchangable. The only 2 young QBs in the draft struck me as mediocre prospects. I had them ranked in the top 16 so I would have taken one if they had dropped.
It's going to be very interesting the first few drafts to see how the QB situation plays out.

One of the things I did in reranking was move up the young QBs. I'm just going to play the kid and see what happens. He has no accuracy particularly, but his potential is good.
Who knows, 10 seasons out he might be the best QB left.

Yeah...I moved to pick at 14 purposely...I did manage to get a 25 year old though...we'll see if he turns out..

When I first set up the league, there was a huge difference between QB's. There was a problem in another position, though, so I tweaked some code and re-populated, and we ended up with the batch that we have now. So a lot of it is just how the dice fall when players are created.

If the preseason is any measure at all, Colorado might return to the form we had before we left the RMFL..sadly, I don't see it happening.
