1964 Draft

Any thoughts?

Here are a few of mine...

If someone could be patient, I wonder how John Plunkett and John Abrell could develop. They are both starting out so low but have such huge upside...

I'm not sure what to do with Norbeto Gaffney. Clearly he's a talented TE and I have a semi-need at TE...but he's 24. It would probably take a first rounder to get him and I'm not sure that I want to spend a first round pick on a TE...especially one who is 24...especially one who has a execution of "L." What do you guys think? As it stands right now, Gaffney may be the player that has fallen the most for me in this class.

On my draft board the best QB is Tony Francis. I think he has the upside to develop into a red-letter QB...but his accuracy and execution are not ideal at all.

One of my greatest needs in this draft is offensive line, especially at the tackle position. The good news: this draft has several fantastic offensive lineman. The bad news: none of them are tackles! My top-rated tackle is Marvin Garcia and I have him ranked 64th overall. Ugh...

The H-H combination on potential and attitude certainly can be tempting even on a lower-skilled player. I'm not sure Plunkett or Abrell could be useful enough to get playing time, so it's a matter of what an inactive guy can do to improve. I suppose someone with a spot or seriously trying to build could give them some love and see what happens.

Gaffney certainly will have more usefulness for a team in need at FB or TE. His blocking is good, but his strength isn't. I'm set not to draft a TE in the first two rounds. If he falls to R3, which he won't, he's a good value pickup.

Yes, Francis definitely is the top QB in my ranking, but I don't expect to draft him. Don't have anywhere to put him. Nice power arm, and that accuracy could easily top 80 within a season. Based on the QBs in recent drafts, I'd say his upside ranks as good as any I've seen.

Yep, OT is a wasteland, just like S. Best bet is probably to draft a G and slide someone over. Certainly Allen or Christensen at the top of this draft could be trained as a very nice LT.

I have Gaffney at the back of round one, after my pick so I wouldn't get him until round 2, I also have Francis as the top QB, 11th overall.

Garcia is my top rated Tackle as well, though considerably higher than 64, I have him mid 3rd round.

Abrell and Plunkett are both below my draft threshold.

Five of my top 10 are juniors.

If you really want a TE, you can have Steve Green from Hamilton for a future pick (probably a 2nd rounder), or a decent defensive player.

Shameless self promotion in a draft thread, shame on the statue.

I see Gaffney going in the first round (but not to me). Like Jason, I will be more than happy to take him in later rounds.

Francis is on my list as a 'project' QB. Fortunately, I picked up a top-20 QB in last years draft.

Plunkett is in the top half of my draft class, but Abrell is not. Abrell's low catch, break tackle and execution, combined with middling speed and agility are too much to overcome.

I really just want the draft to run, then I can decide what kind of shape I am in.

9 of my top 12 are juniors, which is a bit scary since there's a chance that whichever one of them I end up with will be a low-upside guy. That's the risk you have to take, I guess!

I have 6 juniors in my top 14.

Tough balance between the uncertainty and wanting the advantages of youth. It's definitely a risk to take a raw talent who might end up with very low Pot and/or Att. But if the safe-bet seniors aren't there ...

BTW, does anyone else think too many of these seniors are 23 or 24? I'd be surprised if we aren't a little too high on the age ranges.

Being new to the game, can someone tell me how well we can expect a G to transition to T? I could really use some help at tackle as well and there are a couple of nice Guards out there...

Transitioning is a hot topic for some. Have a read over this thread for an introductory primer.

Click on the player card and you will see their overall grade at each position listed in the little boxes. Both of the top Guards in this draft would make fine Tackles.

Allen - 75
Christensen - 74

Christensen's high Pass Blocking makes him a prime candidate to move to LT and he'll probably be a solid 78-80 overall at LT after a season or two of improves.

Plunkett and Arbell are both very low on my list, I don't think either would be worth the roster space. I can use a TE and so have Gaffney as a 2nd round pick. Francis is indeed the top QB, but I don't really need a QB, so I have him as a 3rd round pick. Regarding OT, I have the two guards Hammy mentioned way up in my 1st round list (I can use a G as well). I'm also looking at DE and LB as potential first round picks, as well as WR.

A few years back I got a couple of those high POT/ATT kids. They were always backups. DE Tony O'Donnell has 88 IMPs out of 218. He was a small DE so he had some weight drills.
Unless you start them, I don't think they will develop enough.

Houston will take the best avail at the end of each round. No kickers tho.

Gaffney would be worth a mid-low second rounder in my opinion, but nothing higher for any team (and Atlanta has two TEs that I'm happy with already, so I'm not going TE at all).

I'm not high on either Plunkett nor Arbell...just not what I need with an already-young team, as most of us have.

Francis gets a 1st-round grade from me--he looks to be a good deep passer. Unfortunately, he doesn't fit my scheme (more short passes, heavy on accuracy).

Garcia is my top-rated T as well, but I have him at 42 overall (still abysmal). Glad I got a tackle at #3 overall last year!

This is a weak offensive draft in general in my opinion, with 7 of the top 10 players on the defensive side of the ball in my rankings.

Ended up with an 8-8 split on the first round, with a QB, 3 RB, 2 WR and 2 G going off the board. Top 10 also split evenly.

Either folks were just in need of offensive skill players or they saw the draft a little differently.

Vegas got just what we wanted at the top, a fast DB. Then, to balance things out, I suppose ... we got a slow WR and a slow DB in R2. But they have other skills I like, and speed was in low supply out there.

But we're happy with Jack Peters as our first pick. Speedy CB are awfully useful against some of the burners we face, although it's a nice bonus if they can tackle someone now and then. Peters also has intriguing offensive skills and might be tempting to use over there occasionally, too.

The rest of the draft is project guys for the Wagers. Some might not even make it out of the preseason if the roster gets too tight, but we got a useful CB, FB and G in there.

Yeah...roster space is definitely becoming a bit tight as talent increases and ages are still relatively young..

It was, to me, a shallow pool and I got one reasonable player out of it Sayforth, who will start at nickelback and back up elsewhere with a view to taking over at SS in the near future .

Other than that I see no great plans for my 1964 draftees.
