Chasing McCool

July 17, 2011 at 06:34PM View BBCode

I'm putting up this thread to track [url=http://simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=4197880]Richard Rahl's[/url] chase of [url=http://simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=1669527]Bart McCool's[/url] TRL HR record of 571.

In the game versus Washington at home (game #5 - 4/5/1989), Rahl hit his 551st career home run. This was a walk off shot against [url=http://simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=7621898]Slicker Baker[/url] to lead off the bottom of the 11th inning. This HR ties Rahl with former teammate [url=http://simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=2965120]Matrim Cauthon[/url] for 2nd all time in the TRL. It also brings him to within 20 of tying McCool's all time mark.

Rahl knocked in the 2000th run of his career on June 5

It appears Rahl is running out of steam. He is currently hitting and all-time career low of .236. He as added 2 more HR since my last update, moving him into 2nd place All Time alone with 553, 18 behind career leader McCool.

Rahl has also pulled into 3rd in All Time hits. He currently holds 3393, and is looking up to former teammate Cauthon's 3523 in second place, and Mickey Mays' 3637.

Rahl has also pulled into 4th All Time in Runs scored with 1894. He ranks behind Mays (2027), Tom Tresh/Randy Muncrief (1989), and Cauthon (1948).

It has become doubtful that Rahl will catch any of these records (or advance beyond his current rankings), but hopefully he can come up with a 2nd half surge. He is the All Time RBI leader, and the first to reach 2000, as gatkeri updated us on.

After hitting just 2 HR in the first 62 (1 in the first 49) games of the season. Rahl is starting to come back to life. He has now hit 3 HR in his last 21 games (2 in his last 8). He now has 5 on the season and 555 for his career. Sill 16 behind McCool.

With 48 games remaining in this season... and most likely his career, Rahl is now sitting with 7 HR on the season... and 557 for his career. This is 14 behind McCool.

Rahl is up to 11 HR on the season now. This gives him 561 for his career, 10 behind McCool's 571.

However, the Privateers have just 16 games left on the season. Rahl is currently 40 years old (40 OS), and is in his 21st season. With his B- health, and heavily declining numbers this year (career lows across the board ), I doubt he returns for one more season. Maybe he will, but most likely not.

So, it looks like "close but no cigar," Rich.

but defintely the "Modern Era" career leader...

I dub the "Modern Era" as anyone who did not appear in the 1950s. This is for two reasons: 1) original drafts always have some "freak" performances, just because of the nature of the draft... and, more importantly, 2) originally, there were no declines. Look at McCool for example: even the year he retired, he not only did not decline, but was still improving!

Rahl may have finished his career on the DL, as he was injured for 27 days on 9/23 against Minnesota. He finished the season with 12 HR, putting him at 562 career HR, just 9 behind McCool. Perhaps he'll return for next season ,but it is unlikely as he is now 40 and has played 21 seasons.

If he does retire, Rahl will finish with these all time rankings:

1st in games played
1st in AB
3rd hits (68 behind Cauthon, 182 behind Mays)
5th in singles
7th in doubles
12th in triples
2nd in HR (9 behind McCool)
10th in BB
1st in Ks
4th in Runs (107 behind leader Mays)
1st in RBI
4th in SB
8th in CS

11 AS appearances (7 starting)
1 WS ring
1 WS appearance
5 ALCS appearances

Not bad for a guy that never quite reached a full A rating.
