About colleges and the college draft
July 23, 2011 at 03:36AM View BBCode
I've talked about this in bits and pieces over the past year but I wanted to go over things a bit since we'll be facing the very first college draft soon.
There are 64 colleges in the SCAA (Simulated College Athletic Association), divided into two divisions. Colleges don't actually play each other (yet), but students assigned to those colleges are arranged into teams as if they were. All colleges are fictional, although they may have name similarities to real-life colleges.
Some colleges have stronger football programs than others, and those schools will tend to attract more talented players. There is a College By Rank page to show the college "pecking order".
Players on college teams are assigned to "First String", "Second String", "Special Teams", and "Backup". This directly impacts how these players develop: First String players get more improvement chances than Second String, which gets more than Special Teams, which gets more than Backup. Of course, the more a player plays, the more chance they have of being injured as well.
Players who are injured in college stop getting improvement chances until they heal, and another player takes their place on that "string". If the replacement player improves enough, the injured player may come back to find himself on the second string or as a backup.
In addition to injuries, players may find themselves on Academic Suspension (if they have low Execution) or possibly be suspended for an SCAA violation (if they have low Attitude). Suspensions also prevent improvements as the players are unable to practice with the team while suspended.
In Week 4, the top couple hundred seniors and a handful of juniors will declare for the draft, and the draft ranking for the next college draft will become available. Technically, the players don't actually declare until January, but they make their intentions known by Week 4 so you can evaluate the draft talent during your Bye week.
After the offseason runs, the Combine results will be visible on the Scouting menu for all players who are uninjured at the time of the Combine.
After the college draft, all seniors that were not drafted (declared or not) and and declared juniors that were not drafted move to the Waiver Wire. If these undrafted players are not claimed off the wire within a couple of seasons, they will quietly retire and disappear (they will actually be completely deleted from the system).
Just prior to Week 1, incoming freshmen will populate the college system. There will always be 960 incoming freshmen no matter how many teams there are, but the talent levels will be based on the number of teams so the talent distribution will be right 4 seasons later when they go into the draft. The colleges with the worst holes get filled first, then in order by school rank, although 1 out of every 5 students picks a school for reasons other than the athletic program (and thus get assigned randomly).

So I started looking at colleges and started at the top with California University Los Angeles (which couldn't be anything like UCLA, because the Bruins never are ranked No. 1).
Notice right away that they have no QBs. That seems pretty strange.
Hawaii University has 6 of them.
How does this work? If CULA has no QBs, how does the depth work? Or is it not required that every team have a player at each First String spot?
Hawaii, for instance, has no DT. Arizona has no C.

How will the college draft order work for the first season? Are you snaking the rounds?

The system tries to distribute players evenlty but there is no requirement for any particular makeup, but for an initial population it's odd that CULA has no QB. I'll check it out.
And yeah, its ranking probably is more due to me growing up in Los Angeles than reality. :)

CULA is short a few players too, that's odd.
Last time I tinkered with this, the top colleges were sucking up so much of the talent there was nothing left for anywhjere else; I may have overcompensated for it.

No, the 64 colleges in the system now are all there are going to be.

So are we going to draft college players prior to the main draft in Gamma or not?

No, the main draft occurs first, THEN the college draft. The draft order for the college draft is based on the total team salaries after the initial draft, so the team that drafts best in the initial draft drafts last in the college draft. The college draft occurs the next day so you have 24 hours after the initial draft to assess your roster and fill any resulting holes.
The way the code sits right now, you would end up with 77 players after the two drafts; I'm wondering if it wouldn't be better to drop the last superround of the initial draft (meaning each team drafts 60 in the initial draft instead of 70) so each team ends up with 67 players after the two drafts. Any thoughts? Would you rather start with 67 or 77 players? (With 77 players it's almost certain all teams will start out over the cap.)

I would rather start over and have to cut guys to get under. But that's just me.

You are viewing the raw post code; this allows you to copy a message with BBCode formatting intact.
I would also prefer to keep a full initial draft.

I generally cut all players from the last round so I wouldn't miss it.

My sense is that owners will put more time into ranking positions deeper when they know it's for multi-season. There might be guys who ordinarily would have been cut because there would be insufficient development time, but in a long-term league they might be more appealing.
I would suggest we test it with the larger number of players and see how it goes.
If we see that no one keeps those players anyway, we could always recommend cutting the last superround later.

OK, even though we are skipping the amateur draft before the first season, I still don't understand something.
When I look at the rosters of the College teams, I am seeing all their skills in every category.
Why, then, would I use the Combine page, which gives me only a vague ability to determine player skills?

In a letter league, the Combine actually gives you more accurate data In a numbers league you've already got fairly pinpoint info so you may not need it.
Also, the Combine page actually uses game code to determine speed and such, so it includes interactions between speed (raw top speed), agility (acceleration) and stamina (how long top speed can be maintained). So it may help make decisions due to that. But in a numbers league yeah, the Combine isn't as useful.

(I did find the combine results useful, and I will definitely be using the team drills page for setting my own depth charts and such.)

I've regenerated the college draft pool so it no longer includes the seniors. The current Juniors will become Seniors when we hit Regular Season Week 1.

When do we see an Amateur Draft page to start ranking players?
