The long chase

Can the Gothams' Mickey Mays put a 176 hit season together at age 39?
IF so, he will become the TRL all-time leader in hits, passing Matrim Cauthon. Considerinbg he has had 186, 162 and 169 hits the last three seasons, playing in 145 games, it could get interesting.
Will ABE sabatage with an injury? If he falls short, will ABE retire him? Some drama for will add box office for a struggling Gothams franchise.

Good luck! My boy Mat broke the record and still played another year after.... just to push that number a bit higher and almost out of reach. I was surprised to see Mays not retire this year, considering he and Mandragoran were from the same draft class, and the same age... though Mays' health was better.

I'm pulling for him. He's had a great career. A really, really nice all-around player.

With 66 games to play, Mays is 67 hits away from tying th e hits record. He is hitting .322 with 108 hits in 85 games played (out of 96).
Other question is...does ABR let him come back next year at age 40?

ABE just might be cruel and get him injured 1 hit shy of the record!

44 games left, 46 hits short of tying the record....

24 hits needed in 22 games is gonna be tough.
The way Mays is producing this year he should comeback as it would be likely in the pro's that a player that is still producing (like Mays) that falls short of breaking a record (like all-time hits) at the end of a season would come back the following season to break it.
At this point if ABE retires him after the end of the season that would just be wrong.

I agree. Given the scenario he'd never retire in RL. Seeing as it's a tough call figuring out what Abe would do I'd give Tyson a head's up to the situation now. He may be able to tell whether or not Mays would get retired or not and maybe prevent ABE from screwing it up if that's the case.

Mickey has a 152 hits in 127 games this season. 24 hits in 20 games to own the record. At that pace he would end the season with 23.93 hits. The drama.
There are older players in TRL (Fred Patek for one, while Rugger Danforth is the same age. Neither had health ratings that match Mays.
The biggest issue, he needs to sit at least twice between now and the end of the season. He could use a hot streak right now.

Mays is within 10 hits of being the record-holder, and having an All-Star season.
If ABE retires him, I am going to be not happy.

I hope he just KOs the record this season and takes the decision out of the judges hands!
"Given the scenario he'd never retire in RL."
That little tidbit of logic is 100% on point.

10 hits with 11 games to go...he should have no problem cruising thru the record the way he has been hitting. No signs of a slump.
He's having a terrific year despite the deterioration in his skills. Based upon his production I don't think he'd normally be retired. His age may be the determining factor. I don't know about this, has the game had any 40yo players?
If he comes back next year and tacks on another 150 he'll have that record for quite awhile. I only see one active guy in the Top 30 that has a real shot a catching him.

I think I remember Kratchin for StL played a year as a 40 year old.

Needs 6 hits with 6 games to play.... the only drama left in Gothams season as NL cross-town rivals for a Subway Playoff Series.
Three against Black Sox at home, three in Boston to end season.

I had 2 guys that hung on until they were 40 when I first got here... but they both still had A- health ratings. I have the feeling that Abadie will be back again next season. He'll be 40, but was an A+ health guy that's at A- now.
Unfortunately, I doubt Mays returns. Kind of surprised he didn't retire at the end of last season to be honest. This in mind, if he doesn't beat my old guy's record this year... I do hope he returns to do it next year.

Another long chase that may be broken up due to retirement...
Richard Rahl is now 35 HR away from tying the all time mark set by Bart McCool (571). He is 38 (OS) with a B health rating... and sits with 28 HR so far this season... and is looking at making a return to the All Star team (possibly for the 11th time). So, I'm hoping he's still viable enough to give it another season or two himself.

It would be a shame if either Mays or Rahl retired - since in real life, they would definitely keep trucking on.
Mays has lost a little power over the years - but little else. Still 145 games played this year.
Anyway - after being held hitless in the finale yesterday - he needs two hits to tie, three to take over the all-time hits record.

Mays has now tied Cauthon in most career hits. He heads into the final game of the season with a full level of energy, and needing just one hit to break the record. NYN has moved him into the leadoff spot, to provide extra chance to pick up the hit.

Done. Mays is the new hits leader, for now. If Rahl can last two years - he can be the hits and hr king.

Mays has hit leadoff since he has come to NY primarily. This was not a one-time deal to get a few more plate appearances;

Despite rumors of his retirement after setting the TRL all-time hit record, Mickey Mays is coming back for the 1988 season.
"I feel fine. They may have downed me a grade, but I still feel I can contribute at the top of the Gothams order. I am looking forward to putting some distance between me and some of the upcoming challengers for the record. Bridger is too close for comfort, if you ask me."
