I need help!!

March 11, 2011 at 05:38PM View BBCode

I'm a long time baseball guy who has mastered things pretty well over there, and now I'm trying to get into the football and I'm frustrated to say the least. There isn't really any frame of reference for play-calling strategy, which is obviously the most important part of the game, so I've been tinkering back and fourth with lots of different techniques, but nothing seems to work. At first I had it pretty balanced, that didn't work. Then I noticed one of the good teams in my league using shotgun sets all the time, so I tried that, still stunk. Then I tried more run heavy, still stunk. Now I'm not expecting anyone to completely lay out their whole philosophy for me, but if somebody could just point me in the right direction and give me something to start with I would really appreciate it.

If you would post a link to your depth chart it might help, as we could make specific suggestions for your team's strengths/weaknesses.

I tend to use a very balanced approach. But I also have only been moderately successful. (1 Sim Bowl loss, 3 playoff appearances, 1 team finished 6-10, 2 teams missed the playoffs at 9-7, in 6 seasons.)

To be honest, play calling doesnt seem to really matter nearly as much as it should imo, especially defensive play calling. The only play calling thats actually pretty important is offensively calling the plays that give you the best % of getting 1st downs in important situations. When it comes down to it i think player talent and drafting well is the most important thing.

Your Game Plan/Concept/Identity starts with the draft. Drafting componants needed. You are past this. See what parts you have. Move those parts around in formations. I had a #1 WR drafted Top 3.Couldn't catch a cold. Moved him to Flanker, catching over 60% since. Make your game plan fit YOUR players. Good Luck!!

Here is my current roster. I feel like I have some talent, but the guys just can't seem to do anything, particularly complete or catch passes.

It actually looks like a solid enough team to me, too. How are you faring compared to the league as a whole in passing and rushing? Is it possible there's just more defensive talent?

OK, first thing that I would do is to promote DE Jones and TE Lee and demote DT Hinchman and TE Geis. I'm not really sure what you are trying to do there, but you will win more games if your best players are active.

Next thing:

Your team seems to be fairly balanced and middle-of-the-back. Your O-line is good, but not great, with some holes in the pass blocking (your 2nd OT, for instance). Your QB is solid, but he isn't a superstar. Your RB's are decent. Your WR's have good hands and one of them has great break tackle ability.

So here are my recomendations:

Set your depth charts as follows:

QB - Lynch
HB - Lewis, Moreno
FB - Lee (backup TE), Moreno
FL - Trocano
SE - Potts
SL - O'Sullivan
TE - Crawford
C - Paul
LG - Williams
RG - Clements
LT - Lens
RT - Milano (if you want to pass more), Hunter (if you want to run more)

Suggested offensive settings:

On 1st down, set it up so that you have 25 middle run, 25 end run, 25 of some type of pass, and 25 of some other type of pass. Watch your next game to see which is the most effective and make adjustments as needed.

2nd and short - do what makes sense, run the ball straight up the middle like, 60% of the time, and have fun with the other 40.

2nd and Medium - if your goal is to gain a 1st down here, you want to be using shotgun passes; if your goal is to shorten the distance for a 1st down, try some end runs and short passes.

2nd and Long - same as 2nd and medium, if you just want to close the gap and try again on 3rd down, try some running plays and short/medium passes. If you want to try for the first down, throw long.

3rd and short - again, go with what makes sense, short passes and running the ball.

3rd and medium - mostly medium and long passes, but you may want to run it sometimes and just play the field position game (since you have a very good FG kicker and a decent punter)

3rd and long - go deep!!!!

4th and short - high percentage short passes and running the ball (notice a theme here?)

4th and medium/long - go deep!!!!

Good luck to you, I hope you can figure out a way to turn things around a little bit. I think it will help to have Lee playing FB for you and to adjust your OT's so that your higher pass blocker is in the game more.

So when passing, should I always just go with a shotgun pass?

Not necessarily. In shotgun, your slot receiver is on the field, but your TE doesn't get as many looks. Your TE is really good, so I would want to mix it up and throw some from regular formations as well.

My last game went pretty well, I won 34-10 and my QB had his best game of season. I didn't get much production from my running game despite having my #1 RB healthy again for the first time in 3 weeks and I'm not getting as much production as I would like from my #1 receiver, but my 2nd & 3rd WR's both had big games as well as my TE so I guess I can't complain too much. My next game appears like its going to have some bad weather so I'll see how that goes. I'm assuming I'm going to need to try to run the ball more. I'll let you guys know how it goes.
