Can you pate what the error message is? Are you still getting it? We've made some adjustments tonight that have solved similar issues for a couple of people.

I am really, really enjoying my test league. My team is horrible, though. i don't really care about my record fortunately, seeing as I'm just learning how to run my team.
I've changed up my playbook (strategy) several times, actually almost every game and sometimes 4 times within a game, trying to find the right balance for my team. I have a lot of suggestions for the league, but I would like to point out that I think it could be a huge success and I give you major kudos for the format. It's really fun!!I love that I can change up the playbook throughout the day. There are a few suggestions I have that I feel could make the game even that much better.
When I was a kid, I played a game called status pro football and loved it. I like to feel that whatever plays I call can really make a difference if I fool my opponent. I have a few questions as to the format of your operating system. If I call "play action" and the defense called "inside run" how much are the odds of a completion increased? If I call a screen on a blitz can I take it to pay dirt occasionally? Why no 2 TE formations? Wild cat? Why no draw play? You know what I'm getting at. I guess what I want to know is, is it a huge part of the game to fool your opponent based on your strategy or is it mostly based around player talent in the end? How much influence do I have as a coach?
And lastly, when do the dynasty leagues start?
Thank you so much for your hard work on this league. I'm going to really enjoy it.

It varies based on the Execution of the defense but it is up to about 10%.

Yes, although this was reduced a bit in last night's update, as screens were being heavily abused.

More options are coming. The idea of using strategy as opposed to just setting lineups is at the core of my design philosophy. But it takes time to build.

There are two basic ways ways to build a simulation like this: a matrix method, where each possible strategy is compared against each other possible strategy, or an analysis method, where the actual formaytions and movements are analyzed (on the baseball side we talk about this as the "grid system"). The system is for the most part based on the matrix method now, which is easier to code and balance but adding new options takes a lot of time as you have to individually design each strategic match-up.

The analysis or grid method is a few orders of magnitude harder to design and keep balanced but once it's working, adding new options is just a matter of generating data and letting the analysis engine handle it. Also, the analysis method is more subject to being "gamed" if its flaws can be found, so it needs to be flawless. I am working toward this system, at which time it will be easier to add more plays and even allow people to design their own plays.

I think a great deal, perhaps too much so. :) When the Advanced Strategy options come online, you will literally have complete control over pretty much everything. My concern at that point is that the game will swing too much toward those who have a ton of time to put into sitting in the virtual "film room" and crafting strategies as opposed to casual players who want to just use the presets. I may have to have some leagues that have advanced options available and some that don't.

Probably about 3-4 weeks from now.

Thanks for replying so promptly. I would probably enjoy advanced settings. Cheers.

The advanced settings is basically a page where you can set up rules for any situation, and for each rule there are four options like the regular strategy screens. So it would be like:

In quarters []1 []2 []3 []4, with [120] to [600] seconds left on the clock, with the ball [20] to [40] yards from the goal, on down []1 []2 []3 []4, with [1.5] to [4.0] yards to go, and I am between [leading by 3] and [losing by 7], and I have []0 []1 []2 []3 timeouts remaining, and my opponent has []0 []1 []2 []3 timeouts remaining, do:

[50] Medium Pass [20] Middle Run [15] End Run [15] Play Action Pass

Internally, all of the rules on the other pages are already converted into this format, so it's just a matter of getting the interface working.

Chris, will we be able to carry these settings (including the new offenses and defenses we've already created) from team to team?

It's been a lot of work setting some of these strategies up, and doing it repeatedly would stop being fun really fast.

Yes, if you have more than one team you should be able to see your saved strategies from all your teams. Advanced strategies will be the same way.

I just signed up for a second team and was hoping that my draft bids could be selected from my first team as well. Can that option be available as well?

One major note I have (and it looks like when advanced settings come out I'll be able to do it) is to be able to run a different scheme for each quarter before the game starts. That way if i have a busy day, I've got a varied strategy for the day. Is there already a way to do that and I'm just dumb?

Right now there is no way to do that, but in the advanced strategies you will be able to specify which quarters those strateies apply in.

The ending of this game just lost me guys. Total Bullsh*t. Won't be paying for football anytime soon.

http://football.simdynasty.com/boxscore.jsp?boxscoreid=11633&thid=1151&qtr=4

Final two minutes and my best quarterback, rated 2nd in the league, can't get out on the field because he is too tired. Bullsh*t. When did ever see a QB who couldn't get back on the field because they didn't have the stamina? Bullsh*t

Then not one, but TWO catch and runs of 50+ yards in the final 1:07? Bullsh*t. On the first one, the receiver, who has B speed, dodges a tackle by a linebacker 7 yards past the line of scrimmage -- no safety help? Bullsh*t

Then, after my second-string QB (who's playing because, of course, my starter is just too tired) does nothing, my punter boots a 27-yard punt with the wind behind him. Bullsh*t

In the words of former player and current commentator Chris Carter: COME ON MAN!

This kind of crap just drives players away.

I have changes that address both of these situations coming in the next day or two, but I understand your frustration. Thank you for trying the game!

Any updates on these advanced settings? I've just started my first season and 2 games in am regretting drafting/building a ball-control, pound the rock offense. Once I get down by even 2 TDs, it's looking fairly impossible to catch back up.

I need some settings to be able to tell the offense when to kick it into high gear and start chucking it.

that's a pretty common issue for NFL ball control offences too, you know. with all respect, why would you expect it to be any different in a sim?

Because score dictates the flow of the game. If my QB/WRs were completely inept, I could see continuing to run the ball down 21 points as my only real hope. But if my passing game is functional (and indeed is fairly decent), tactics should be adjusted.

If an NFL run-oriented team sticks with the run when they're down by a lot late in the game, that OC/HC is gonna be looking for a new job pretty quickly.

The advanced settings mentioned above by Admin would more than do the trick. Dictating settings based on score and time remaining is all I'm looking for, and it seems it's nearly functional. Was merely looking for an estimate on when it would be rolled out.

i won't disagree with that, but we already have the ability to adjust tactics before every quarter. i agree that the advanced settings would be nice, but it seems to me that you already have the ability to do what you ask.

Perhaps. Assuming I can get there and change the settings between each quarter. It'd still be nice to have them automated for those who take the time to set the parameters. Also, I'll admit, I was foggy on what was updateable between quarters.

You can change your strategies and depth charts between quarters. Roster moves (trades, active/inactive, waivers, pickups) can be made but don't take effect until the game is over.

So, let's say you have three QB's on your depth chart:

1 QB A
2 QB B
- QB C

You pick up QB D from the waiver wire and rearrange your depth chart as:

1 QB B
2 QB D
3 QB A
- QB C

The moves for QB A and B will take effect but the addition of QB D will be ignored, so your depth chart is effectively:

1 QB B
2 QB A
- QB C

Defensive Statistics

December 03, 2012 at 05:47PM View BBCode

It's virtually impossible for me to evaluate individual defensive players given the minimal defensive statistics tracked in this game. I would suggest adding tackles and missed tackles for defensive players so that I can at least get a minimal idea of who is playing well and who needs to be replaced on my defense.
