DL adjustment

September 09, 2010 at 10:43PM View BBCode

I think every sport that has a salary cap has an exclusion for players on the disabled list yet we don't .

To avoid exploitation I think we should have it so that the player's salary does not count against the cap only:

1) if he is placed on the DL and

2) only until his injury heals.

Would we just use a simple adjustment formula such as:

Salary/365*Injured Days

to get the adjustment number? Or would we use a % based on number of games missed?

I think it would have to be a % basis .

I don't think that's the case.

In fact in the CFL, the Saskatchewan Roughriders were fined in 2007 because payments they made to an injured player put them over the cap.

Now, the NBA and NHL versions allow you to exceed the cap to replace an injured player in certain circumstance (which can be defined differently by the league).

My own opinion is that for SD salary leagues that there should NOT be an exception. I'm of the opinion that teams need to plan in advance to have a cheap vet or two stashed in the minors as injury replacement as needed. For me this is part of the bidding/free agency process. If I don't have one after Day 4 of bidding I'll usually grab one from the WW.

NHL rules, despite what Wikipedia might say, absolutely allow for Injury Relief:

"Long-Term Injuries:

* A player expected to miss at least 10 games and 24 days due to injury can be listed as a long-term injury (LTI).
* An LTI can be covered by replacement players, as long as the replacement salaries do not exceed the salary of the injured player.
* If the replacement salaries would push a team over the salary cap, the team is allowed cap relief, but only for the portion of the salary that exceeds the cap.
* When the injured player returns, the team must immediately comply with the normal terms of the salary cap."

I can't find anything about injuries in the NFL agreement and modeling anything after the NBA is just a bad idea.
