Credit for the formula and descriptions go to cdunn3
I applied the rules to our league.
------------------------------------------------------------
This index has some correlation to how a team
will perform in a season, but it is not
conclusive. Injuries,trades,roster changes,
ABE's whims, and manager preferences will all factor in.
Also Only overall ratings are considered.
Players on ML rosters are considered.
If all 25 were A+ overall, the rating
would be 100. If all B+ it would be
70, all B 60, etc. For pitchers, relievers
are weighted at 1/3 of starters. For
hitters, bench players are weighted at
1/3 of starters vs. RHP.
Age Index - considering SP, Closer, and Regulars vs RHP
22 is very young, 34 is very old
(Note all reported values below are rounded to the nearest whole number)
AL (Current Standings) TOTAL / PITCHING / HITTING (Age Index)
Det (1st -0) 76 / 81 / 74 (aging)

And I did account for guys on the DL who would normally be starters, by the way

Yes, very interesting. Thanks for putting them together.
Could the formula be applied separately to contact, power, speed, velocity and control and the individual results weighted before being recombined into an overall figure, to take into account the relative importance of power, speed and control? Or is that reflected in the overall ratings anyway?
If feasible, what weighting to apply in each case would be the next question, I suppose.
Could you post the formula itself?

Sure, I will post the Excel spreadsheet on my google docs account
http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0Aqbjyp7xVPbxdGVNekhvd0tUN19RTTVrSXlsU29obnc&hl=en
Basically, I coded the spreadsheet to multiply 3 times the overall ranking score for Starters, the closer, and guys in the R.H. lineup so that the backups would only have 1/3 of the weight. Then I basically averaged the whole team. I also did a separate average for hitters and pitchers. The age index is stuck in there too and averages the offseason ages.
Adding in the Contact and Power numbers, etc would be nice, but I can't directly download those numbers to Excel so I would have to type all of them in manually. Plus, how much weight should be applied to Power, Weight, and Speed, respectively? If there was consensus on that, it could definitely be done, it would just take some time.
