Crush beats St Louis

April 04, 2004 at 05:20PM View BBCode

I've never been able to figure out how to beat the front runners. Congratulations to the Crush, they took the three game series 2 to one. And are now on a three game winning streak. Let the rest of us know your secret.:D

I just had two big series. I had worked my way up to .500 and played the two frontruners back-to-back. I lost all 3 to Cleveland and 2/3 to Detroit to fall 11 games back. Darned if I know the answer.

Good work, I'll try that. I've lost the last two series to Chicago and Pittsburg. I'm in a major slide. Wish me luck.;)

And here is last place in the league, Philly, taking 2 of 3 from Chicago Jebs to prevent them from being in a 3-way tie for 1st. Guess you just never know.

No secret. Just put the ball in play, I guess. Get a big enough lead going into the seventh inning so that the shabby RP's I have can get shelled and maybe still pull out of it. It's not working that well, though, as my record proves. I have a major problem on my roster with a lack of speed. I didn't realize how important it was until this season...and that's probably only because I have NONE. So, it's pretty obvious. My fastest guys in the majors are C+ for speed. That's just not cutting it. I'm sure some of you have noticed, when playing against the Crush, that it usually takes one more hit than normal to score runners. It's frustrating to see runners on first and second and then someone gets a single and you still can't score. I have good hitters on my team, but I have to string many hits together to score runs. Or hit HR's. Homers aren't really the problem, but the squad hasn't been too clutch this season. The only thing I can really count on is my bullpen giving up at least 2 runs, no matter when they come in the game. I'm really looking forward to the two RP's I have on the DL to become healthy. That'll give me a better shot at closing out some games, I think.

I honestly think the talent level on most of the teams in the league is fairly even. We're seeing bottom feeders beating the leaders on a fairly regular basis. And on paper, I like my team. But, the paper is kind of crinkled and most people think it's just trash.

I have the same problem with speed. My best hitters are D type runners. I'm not very athletic. I'm trying to find a balance between the little speed that I do have with some defense. It hurts my production but if my pitching can keep me in it I have a chance. The pithcing seems to be the key. I have no great pitchers so it's hit or miss if I get a good performance. I want my younger players to get better in the minors but maybe it's time to call them up. If you keep knocking off the St. Louis team maybe I'll stick with my veterans a little longer. Good luck.;)

I think our teams are alot alike. Your pitching isn't too bad. It looks like you may have some control issues at times, which is probably why your team is ranked in the standings where it is. But, it's a tough squad. You have some nice talent. I'm just waiting for my pitchers to get a little older. I think they'll be tough when they all age a couple more years. I think players under about 23 usually don't perform up to their ratings. But, once they hit that magic age, things can turn around in a hurry. I hope I'm right.

There is one big disparity in our league. It seems like some of the teams are very young and some are quite old. It makes it tough to trade because the older teams are trying to get younger so they can keep their records going into the next season. Meanwhile, the younger teams are getting crushed and looking for a way to improve without getting too old. I personally put too much emphasis in the initial draft on youth. And it shows. I also didn't put nearly enough emphasis on defense or speed. And that definitely shows, too. What I'm afraid of is the improvements my guys will make during the offseason. I'm guessing most of them won't get a whole lot better with the bats, but they'll take baby steps towards improving their speed and defensive ratings. And that's o.k. with me, I guess. Because on paper, my bats look pretty tough. I'm just not too thrilled about my outfield and their potential. I'm happy with just about everything else (except my current record).

I agree with your assesment of the leagues makeup. The owners who really invested in the future are very young. I wanted to be more balanced. I knew that I couldn't develope all the young players at the same time. I really wanted to be balanced and to focus on having players at all three age levels, young, emerging and prime. It's not working. The St. Louis club seems very young and very good to me. You're right about the problem about trading. I would expect teams in the hunt, with a chance to win it all now, to accept veteran players to put them over the top. It may be too early to tell who those teams are. The American League seems pitching strong and hitting short. I think a good hitter or two could tip the balance of power overthere.

Well, here is the heart of my team--my two fine relievers. I have spent all season funnelling games to them and they have spent all season failing miserably.

2nd Round draft pick [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=927682]Tony Donovan[/url] sports a 4.77 ERA as a B/A reliever. 7th round choice [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=928246]Craig Williams[/url] sports a 5.32 ERA at B-/A-.

Frankly, those two have single-handedly destroyed my season so far with absolutely horrific seasons. They keep appearing in games and I keep saying, "They have to get hot soon..." But it just never happens. They get racked up every time out.

Meanwhile, starting pitchers with similar ratings routinely hold me to a single run for 9 innings. It's been just dismal over here. And speed does appear to have been more important than I had imagined. I managed 4 hits in the 12th inning one game WITHOUT scoring. It's been like that all season...nobody score from 2nd on a hit and the next guy makes out--if not two outs.

sobs...

I don't even have a rational explanation for my debacle other than I put too much faith in two 19 year old starters. I can never synch my starting pitching with hitting and my RPs obviously are devoted to padding my opponents stats. I can not make a trade for the starter I need despite the fact i have some good prospects. Need some cheese for my whine for sure.

By the way Jeremy I'll trade Locke if it will help me get Klink. I WILL trade Callahan who I think wil really help u.

I kind of liked your offer, but couldn't pull the trigger. I sent you another offer with Klink in it and the pitchers you offered earlier. I want to swap players at another position. I need some more speed and you could probably use the extra power. Could definitely help us both out.

I'm going out of town sometime tomorrow mid-morning, so don't be surprised if I don't get back to you until sometime Thursday.

Unfortunately the Baltimore deal makes little sense for me as I am already one starter short in '51 and you would be asking me to trade my best one. In replacement I would get a VERY suspect 34 year old and still be one starter down. Also I would now lack anything pretending to be a lead-off hitter when I currently possess the best one in the entire AL. I need to get a legitimate 3rd starter before I do anything else. I appreciate the offer and look forward to hearing from the estimable Gnomes again and you are right that Leach is awesome and any sane person would love to have him.:D
