Gold Glove Awards

August 25, 2009 at 10:00PM View BBCode

I have started to add Gold Gloves into the sim. I'm more or less done with the major mechanics, but still need to add the awards on the player cards and owner cards.

The voting will be refreshed each night like the MVPs. I've put these on a new page, as to not slow down the already bulky AllStar page. You can find this under the Stats menu.

I used a suggested formula for the voting, which is:
(Fielding PCT * 1000) + (+/- * .5) + (RF * 15)

For catchers, the formula is:
(FLD%*1000)+(CS%)-(PB*2)

Position players need a minimum of 5 Innings played in the field at a single position per team game to be eligible, pitchers 1 inning played.

I've made it so that different leagues can use their own formula if they don't like this one. The formula has to be a simple formula like this, using stats from the database and multipliers.

Let me know if you have any feedback.

Also... I have added player popups to the Allstar page.

I'd like to see a bit more weight given to +/- and caught stealing personally but this is a nice start.

To me +/- for fielders and CS% for catchers are the primary measurements of defense in the SIM.

See, the formula has done a great job in every instance I've used it (both leagues, 8 positions, 15 seasons). If you want to propose a different formula and put it through its paces go ahead. This has been tried and true as far as I'm concerned.

ETA: Actually, I missed where Tyson said it was easy to use different formulas that's great!

Thanks for working on this Tyson. A lot of people will enjoy this added feature especially me.

I don't see the page under the stats menu. Am I missing something?

Never mind, I had to reload the page after resetting a few things.

I don't care for that formula, though I'm not going to fight it as I don't have anything much better in mind. However, it comes down entirely to fielding percentage, as the point distribution is essentially 900-1000 for FPCT, -10-10 for +/-, and 30-150 for RF depending on position. Thus +/- has little to no effect (is this by design?)

RF brings up another issue, as RF varies wildly by position. Thus it just means each position will have a different scale, so OFs that don't make errors will be favored more so than 1Bs that don't make errors. Obviously this has no effect on each position independently.

However, that's all league dependent so not really worth debating too much. The only change I would encourage: can the links to the player cards direct to the fielding stats, a la the Individual Stats page?

Defense is hard enough to quantify effectively in RL, let alone here. There are bound to be issues.

That said, many great fielders commit more errors simply because they have the range to get to more balls. Cal Ripken had a great fielding percentage but didn't get to dozens of balls Ozzie Smith hauled in.

I do believe RF should be extremely valued, particularly for up-the-middle guys.

I'll have to post the rationale for the formula tonight after I get home. The fact that FLD% is worth 1000 and the other components don't add nearly that much to the formula doesn't mean that it overweights the percentage. Differing RFs between postions are irrelevant when determining who is best at a given position. It does make the voting look a little weird but to normalize the factor between them would add another variable to the equation adding further strain to the system.

To be honest, I didn't give the formula much thought, I just used what was posted in the ideascale thread by Dwight. I agree that it is heavily weighted towards FPCT. We'll use this as the default to start with, and as people complain, I can add more formulas to the mix. Only caveat is that the formulas have to be simple without any "ifs" like.... if the player won the Gold Glove before, he gets +10 or something like that - we won't be able to do that.

I'll try to change the links to go to the fielding page today.

While your doing that it might be nice to spread it out a little. The table is rather small for the page on my computer at least. Just a thought.

Rather than spread it out, if we have that room, let's display FPCT and +/- for that player.

Also, if leagues can have different formulas, displaying the formula in use might be good.

Very Nice.

Ok, I should have most everything setup. Adding other stuff to the page like FPCT would be a bit of work, so I'm going to hold off for now. I'll add that in next time around.

I made this guy the GG winner last season just to test colors:

What do you think? Is it different enough from MVP, yet still readable?

Here's an MVP for comparison:

I think the color is good my question would be that All-Stars, ROYs, and MVPs are going to supercede the GG I would assume. It could make it hard to figure out if a player won a GG in a year they did well eslewhere.

Maybe we can do a title="Gold Glove, All Star Starter, MVP" to the TR for that stat line, Tyson? Then hovering over the row will show all the pertinent awards for that year.

What about an "Awards Box" each year as BaseballReference does.

[url=http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/pujolal01.shtml]example[/url].

There appears to be enough space for it.

I agree something like an Awards box of either small icons or words for awards would be useful instead of color coding.

I would really love to see an awards box containing small icons. A glove for gold gloves, gold Star for allstar starters, silver for the backups, maybe a nice crown for MVP/Cy Young would be sweet. I can try and hunt up small icons, what would you want? 24x24 Gifs?

shouldn't the line have a background color on the fielding stats page, too?

Through 89 games of the 2042 season [url=http://beta.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&statsorimps=fielding&id=40785]Jack Garber[/url] is the leader in the American League at catcher despite catching only 97 innings.

Thanks, I will look into that issue this week.

In addition to the innings played issue, are you still using the above formula for catchers? If you are, something's wrong. Garber is at 1000, but should be at 1000 + 21.4 - 2 = 1019.4. This is the case for catchers that actually qualify as well (Hoffman is at 998 + 35.7 - 0 = 1033.7 != 997).

Also, would it be possible to link to the fielding stats on the player card from the GG positional rankings page (like it does for the main GG page now)?

Is there a way to lump all the OF together? We already have the problem in the All-Star voting, where a LF might be the 8th best OF in the league but because the other 7 are CF and RF, good old #8 makes a first-team All-Star appearance.

I'd hate to see a Dave Kingman clone in LF win a Gold Glove, while a Jim Edmunds-clone finishes 2nd to a Devon White-clone in CF.

That is what we did. It should be easy to do it that way. Just like the backup OF are figured.
