Sim Dynasty Podcast
May 06, 2009 at 04:07PM View BBCode
CCondardo and MrUndershaft have started a podcast solely dedicated to Sim Dynasty.
I've removed the link to the Pilot - the podcast will be released on May 11th in a more polished format.
They are interested in inviting members onto the show and other stuff to give users another media to learn and get into Sim from. The aim is to closely resemble a type of sports talk radio show.
If you're interested in submitting sound bites or questions, please contact them.

Just listened, very nice work boys.
Oh, and Bart - they aren't MVPs because they are RFers, they are RFers because they are MVPs.

well yes and no. Looking back over the past 15 years, there are certain positions that need a bump in order to win the MVP. Shortstops and catchers notably however, when one compares a legitimate 1B MVP (see Pujols, Howard, Giambi, Vaughn or Thomas) to other positions they are able to overcome the position bonuses without trouble (Morneau is the only one who can't). RFers don't (Gonzalez twice, Vlad and Ichiro all need the bonus that I give to RFers to compete with other legitimate contenders). Now some may argue that Juan didn't deserve his MVPs but I haven't heard that argument put in for Vlad and Ichiro. I even added in a "newcomer" portion to the formula to show a player's first year on a team but even that couldn't offset the issue).
The truth is that if you think that right fielders are treated the same as leftfielders and firstbasemen you're wrong.

I'd argue all day that Ichiro was not the AL MVP that year, he wasn't even the Mariners MVP, Ichiro was simply a function of media hype that year. He could've played anywhere and he'd have won the MVP.
With Vladi it was a simple matter of the fact that Ortiz and Manny split votes in a highly competitive year, I don't for one second believe that even one voter went "hmmmm, I think I'll go with Vladimar because he plays RF" on the other hand Guerrero plays RF because he is a superior hitter with limited range and a rocket arm.
The real flaw, in my mind, is trying to write a formula to "prove" subjective results. Don't get me wrong I admire the time and effort put into this but in the end it's just another "theory" of why MVP's are selected.

I'm not sure why the link isn't working. Make sure its simdynastyradio.podbean.com with no `www'. Also if that doesn't work and you have itunes search Simdynasty and see if that works. U2U me if you have any other problems.

And as I said, I'm not trying to select the best player. The formula is designed to mimic the baseball writer's MVP and yes I'll agree with you that nobody says "well he's a RF so I'll vote for him" but based on the data present there is a bump for RF.

If you'd like to see an award that tries to just pick the best player, vote for this idea:

Bart, we could go on indefinitely about this.
I've already stated that I admire the work, however I think that there are other factors, rather than position, that could've been taken into affect in MVP voting that we somply can't recreate in SIM.
In the Ichiro case, as I said, it was a media hype so do we build in a "Media Darling" component ?
Obviously not.
The Vladi case, where team mates split votes, is another problem that is not in SIM but definitely affected that race.
As for Morneau, well there's just no justifying that one or Gonzalez over A-Rod.
