Lopsided Trade

April 01, 2009 at 01:34PM View BBCode

A trade has been completed between the Cincinnati Reds and the Philadelphia Phillies. The Philadelphia Phillies receive Marshall Edwards, Draft Pick - 1970 Round 1 (PHI) from the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for Burt Carbo, Draft Pick - 1970 Round 2 (CIN).

Maybe I am missing something here but isn't Edwards worth much more than Carbo? Given the draft picks involved, this trade can only be balanced if Carbo > Edwards.

I don't think it is a good trade either, but...

The Phillies are one of (if not the only) original owners in the league and I've dealt with the Reds a lot in the 10 seasons I've been in this league. Both owners are good owners and if this is the deal they agreed upon than I it is a good trade. Even if we don't understand it.

The draft pick could be a matter of 1 spot ( 16th for 17th overall)
I only got one other offer for Edwards. A playoff 2nd and a C rated 21 yr old pitcher. Which was better?
If only 1 or 2 teams wants him, what is an owner to do?
Also, I wanted Bugs Konetchy in return for Edwards, but it wasn't going to happen. Is it really lopsided? What about Hanson for the 1st rounder? A playoff pick most likely. And Hanson is better than Edwards, is he not?
I'm surprised no one wants Seery, Williams or Anderson. What is there worth? I do want to know for my own good.

If that was the best out of multiple offers you received, then I guess I have no problem with it. Honestly I would have given up a similar prospect without the exchange of draft picks, but I would have considered making such an offer to be insulting. I guess I should have made it anyway.

I suppose it wouldn't have hurt. I would have asked for Binks, Chapman OR Smith in return. Maybe would have accepted Quillen if you had offered, however, I'm not fond of Lefties in this game.

I don't think Carbo is near as good of prospect as the guys you mentioned on my team. Maybe you are way higher on him than I am. He was a 3rd round pick for a reason after all.

like I said, I wanted Bugs.
And would you have given up one of those guys I mentioned?

If I had a clear need for Edwards, I would consider Chapman and maybe Matt Smith to be a fair deal. Even without a clear need, I'd probably have given up Rags Smith or Dave Blethen. I'd consider all of those guys better than Carbo.

That being said, I value veterans more and prospects less than most.

I've placed a trade offer to Cincinnati to reverse the prior trade and encourage them to take one of the better offers out there...thanks, John

I appreciate your willingness but its certainly not necessary on my account. I only pointed out that the trade seemed lopsided on the surface, but after explanation I am satisfied that there is no problem.

You guys are free to do what you want. Everybody pays money to run a team and should be able to make moves as he/she sees fit. The rule is in place to deal with collusion, a clear example of trying to help one team win. It is not in place for what some people may feel is a lopsided trade. All trades aren't created equal, in most trades there is a winner and a loser. I don't think it is right for anybody to feel pressured into reversing a trade because a few don't see eye to eye with the deal.

With that said, I had no problem with this deal, the Hansen deal or any deal made in the 8+ seasons I have been in the league. Feel free to trade who you want, and get back in return what you feel is fair value. Even if some people don't understand the move.
