Phila-Brooklyn

The Ramblers and Kings finished the 1974 series in a flat-out tie with 102 wins apiece, and the playoff series that followed began with expectations of a great series. The Ramblers appeared to take control winning the 1st 2 games in Brooklyn, only to see the Kings take the next 3 games when the series returned to Philly. The Ramblers continued the winning streak of the visiting team to 6 games by taking the 6th game in Brooklyn.

The Ramblers began game 7 with its 2nd crippling injury that would affect their playoff hopes. Setup man Vito Olivetti joined all-star catcher and MVP candidate Dusty Seymour (injured in game 161 of the season) on the shelf. Since Olivetti could not be replaced during the playoffs, the Ramblers were operating a man short in the 'pen. The Ramblers knew they'd have to outscore the Kings and they got off to a great start with a 4-run 1st against Luke Handley. The Kings chipped away at the lead, closing to within 4-3 in the 6th inning. Dave Ray then belted a grand slam HR to give the Ramblers a seemingly insurmountable 8-3 lead, but with starter Don Larsen already out of the game, the bullpen would have to hold the lead. Unfortunately, they coughed it up as the Kings tied the game at 8. The Ramblers went ahead in the 9th, 9-8, but with their already depleted bullpen totally used up, the Ramblers turned to 5th starter, Jack Wickland, who had never appeared in relief in his career. Wickland allowed the first 2 runners to reach base, and then gave up the game-winning HR to Brad Robertson. The Kings win the game, 11-9 and the series 4 games to 3.

Good luck to the Kings in the World Series against Detroit. Maybe this will be the year you capture that elusive title!!

Thanks for the great post! I have been working hard all day and have not had a chance to comment, only time to check the scores. It certainly was a great series. The Ramblers had a great year and a fine series despite the loss. Abadie pounded the Kings pitching staff. Benitez saved a couple of Ramblers wins, but at least we were able to beat him in a critical game when we were down in games.

The pesky Tigers have bested the Kings twice in the World Series. Hopefully we will catch some breaks and finally win our first championship. We would love to return the WS banner to the NL.
